Former Express Editor Peter Hill To Give Evidence to Lord Leveson

Thursday is Northern & Shell day with proprietor Richard Desmond and his editorial director Paul Ashford lined up alongside Daily Express editor Hugh Whittow and the paper's former editor Peter Hill.

Hill will be quizzed on allegations from a former Daily Express reporter that he was to blame for the slew of false stories about Madeleine McCann. Express Newspapers paid out £550,000 in 2008 to the McCanns for libellous coverage in its four titles, including the Daily Express.

Last month the inquiry was told that Hill was "obsessed" with the McCann story and put it on its front page repeatedly just to sell newspapers. Leveson put it to reporters that the stories were "piffle" and "tittle tattle".

It was not the fault of the McCanns that the press published all that carp, it was the fault of sources in the PJ, who pretended it was true, and not just the product of Gonc's imagination. So, who are the press going to want to pay back for that? Clue - it isn't the McCanns.


Yes, the public mood has definitely shifted - millions of people read Kate's book, or extracts in the Sun, and all but a few sicko forkers were heartbroken for the McCann family.

Sites like MM have definitely had a hand in all this - any casual reader of them or Bennett's forum flees in horror at the spite, lies, sick fantasies and sheer rubbish appearing on them. Look how often they have ended up in the papers being described as sickos and trolls.

Also, most media outlets have been on the recieving end of vicious hatespam from the forker sites, and had to close comments because of it.

So, they certainly have helped change opinion - just not in the way they intended to.....

They just have no idea that decent folk think of them as nothing more than obnoxious trolls.
