Jimmy Hoffa Hunt Takes New Twist With Body Claim
The search for the missing US union boss Jimmy Hoffa has been going on for more than 35 years as a new lead emerges.
Jimmy Hoffa went missing in July 1975
The search for Jimmy Hoffa has taken a new twist after a man told police he witnessed the burial of the missing Teamsters union leader under a drive in Michigan.
Investigators are to take soil samples from the area after officers in Roseville received the tip from a man who said he saw a body buried and "thinks it may have been Jimmy he saw interred".
Hoffa was last seen on July 30, 1975, outside a Detroit restaurant where he was supposed to meet a New Jersey Teamsters boss and a Detroit Mafia captain.
His body has not been found despite a number of searches over the years.
Roseville police chief James Berlin said: "We are not claiming it's Jimmy Hoffa, the timeline doesn't add up. We're investigating a body that may be at the location."
Following the claim, Michigan's department of environmental quality used ground-penetrating radar at the scene and found "that the earth had been disturbed at some point in time".
Soil samples will be sent to a forensic anthropologist at Michigan State University to be tested for signs of human decomposition. Results are not expected until next week.
A number of theories about the demise of the union boss have surfaced over the years.
Some say he was entombed in concrete at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, others that his body was ground up and thrown into a Florida swamp or obliterated in a mob-owned fat-rendering plant.
