Archaeologists discovered the remains of a shipwreck in Roman

A team of archaeologists will attempt to locate the remains of a Roman shipwreck in the river Arade in Portimão, as part of a campaign that starts underwater on Wednesday, said this Monday a project manager Lusa.

The field work, which will last two weeks, is a first step in exploring visual and recording, through photographs and drawings, and survey traces that are closer to the surface, said archaeologist Christopher Fonseca.

Admittedly, one of the sites identified for prospecting may have occurred in Roman times a shipwreck due to the discovery of a large concentration of amphorae (ceramic vase sort of), some still full.

However, the hypothesis can only be confirmed with the advance of excavation which, depending on the results now, may take place in 2013, as the area may have served only as anchorage, Christopher Fonseca said.

If confirmed, the area can become part of the tour itinerary divers, attracting curious Portimão, off the city which will be sunk later this month to visit two ships underwater.

"The antiquity of the remains and the ability to tell a story that makes the diving area more interesting," said the official.

Archaeologist and Jose Bettencourt are the coordinators of the campaign promoted by the Center for Archaeological History of Overseas School of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon.

That's quite a find; I look forward to seeing it on Discovery, or similar.
