Star: Child Abductions
Is it me, or have they already done this story? I could swear I've read it before.

Re: Star: Child Abductions
200 KIDS ABDUCTED
By Jonathan Corke
MORE than four Brit kids are snatched by strangers every week, a shock Daily Star Sunday investigation can reveal.
Even more horrifying is that officials had no idea of the scale of the threat posed to children.
The only centrally-held statistics cover all child abductions but have no breakdown of those involving strangers.
Today there are calls for immediate changes to the way we monitor crimes affecting the most vunerable members of society.
Our probe found that there were at least 500 reports of child abduction in England and Wales in 2010 and 211 and, of those, around 42% involved strangers snatching or attempting to snatch youngsters.
The figures, obtained by contacting every police force in England and Wales, show the whereabouts of abduction hotspots.
Just under a quarter of cases involving strangers were in the Metropolitan Police force area, while Greater Manchester Police reported 46 cases of “abduction of a child by other persons”.
West Midlands police had 25 cases, although they pointed out that none had been “successful” stranger abductions.
Although we obtained the fullest picture ever collected, one police force out of the 43 refused to tell us how many children had been snatched or targeted. Cumbria Police claimed that giving us the figures would potentially breach data protection issues.
Almost all the figures submitted for child abductions included attempted abductions, so a breakdown showing how many children were snatched was not available.
Lady Catherine Meyer, who runs the Parents and Abducted Children Together charity (PACT), has been campaigning for a better system of recording missing and abducted children for the past five years.
Lady Meyer, who set up PACT after her own children were abducted, said 211 was “a lot of children abducted by strangers”. She added that a central database was “something I’ve been lobbying and fighting for for years”.
The charity Missing People said our investigation highlighted the need for a national strategy.
Chief executive Martin Houghton-Brown said: “These findings add further weight to the Government’s announcement that it will be developing a national strategy on missing people.”
A Home Office spokesman said: “We are determined to protect vulnerable children.”

Re: Star: Child Abductions
Everybody knows that Stranger Abductions happen. Even that brain dead bunch on MM and Havern's. But we need to know what the percentage is.
I might even accuse our own Government and Police Forces of trying to cover this up.
Although God alone knows why. Even one is bad, and I bet that it is much more than that.

Re: Star: Child Abductions
Abductions are thankfully rare, and make headlines when they do - but how many times are they thwarted? These incidents frequently only get a few lines in a local newspaper.
I seem to recall that a young girl was nearly snatched from outside her parents' cafe, not long after Madeleine went missing?

Are you thinking of Carolina Santos, pretty blonde 3 year old? Attempted abduction from outside her parents cafe in Silves, on Christmas day 2006 [Edited: gave the wrong year. soz]
Carolina was spotted walking off with a man holding his hand. One report said 300 metres away, but I cant find it at present, so dunno if that is correct. They called her, the man let go of her hand, carried on walking around the corner and she ran home
There were also reports that the PJ did not class it as an abduction so did not pursue the case. Case closed!
Note the date: Less than 5 months before Madeleine was abducted
Note the place: Silves. 18 miles, crow flies, from PdL
Note the child: Cute and pretty blonde girl, 3 years old
So glad that Carolina was saved ... but had she gone, maybe we would not be sitting here pondering about Madeleine

Thank you Sadie, that's the one - I had misremembered, it was before, not after.

Carolinas attempted abduction was on Christmas day 2006 and Madeleine went on May 3rd 2007. Just over 4 months afterwards.

Re: Star: Child Abductions
What bothers me, Sadie, is that incidents like this often go unreported, or maybe only get a few lines in the local press.
This one only made the papers because of Madeleine.
So, I do feel the Star's headline is a bit over the top - but there doesn't seem to be any record of how many incidents are stopped before something awful happens.
