The PJ always doubted the Tanner sighting. They didn't claim it, they just requested, in vain, a reconstruction.

And WTF, pray tell, would have been the point of a 'reconstruction' that consisted of poor Jane Tanner seeing a holidaymaker taking his child home?

It would have made matters WORSE, not better.

What would really, really have helped would have been that lazy incompetent Amaral leaving the brasserie for long enough to check the night creche records and eliminating innocent people.

He didn't bother, and fked up the entire investigation.

Scotland Yard has turned the inquiry on its head. Establishing that the Jane Tanner sighting was a "red herring" has opened up possibilities that were all but ruled out by previous investigators - not least the man seen with a child at 10pm.

The importance detectives have put on tracking that man down suggests they may have other information about him they haven't shared; perhaps phone records hold the key, as detectives indicated 10 days ago.

The question as to why it has taken six years for the Tanner sighting to be bottomed out and why e-fits of the 10pm suspect, compiled five years ago, have only now been publicised are uncomfortable ones - but are probably best addressed to the Portuguese authorities, who conducted the first investigation.

All anyone will get from the culprit is babbling about his non-existent 'honour', hypotheses and fridges. Gonc really should be booking that plane ticket to South America.

Madeleine would have been found fast,

if incompetent amaral wasn´t in charge of the crap he did (while coordinator), until the moment he was sacked, whose true purpose was to become a celebrity at the expenses of innocents.

If there is any justice, Portugal will lay charges against him for this, Pedro.

I thought his gross incompetence might seem less appalling in the morning light. It doesn't. It's worse if anything, because of the ramifications of the complete, utter disaster it has caused the investigation.

And he needn't bother attempting to claim his interest in the Smith sighting lets him off. He was only interested in that because he had told himself it could be Gerry McCann, despite that being physically impossible.

He ignored Mr Smith's frankly ridiculous reason for his statement, or that his family didn't back him up.

Gonc only saw what he wanted to see, IMO, he didn't give a XXXX about finding Madeleine McCann.

No, Gonzo didn't 'discount' it - he tried to make people believe it hadn't happened and created a vast conspiracy theory to suit his own ends.

We now know it did happen, but the man was an innocent holidaymaker. As Gonc could have found out for himself if he'd got his backside out of the brasserie and into the night creche to look at their records.

Gonc was only interested in the Smith sighting because he was hoping to further deny reality and make out it was Gerry McCann, despite this being physically impossible.

Mayhap, with the passage of time, Mr Smith is less keen to wrongly blame certain people in order to exonerate certain other people, and sees things more clearly? I seem to recall the Yard saying something about 'loyalties changing'.

I'm just wondering... for a non-English-speaking person, on hearing a Brit with a strong Glaswegian accent, might it be mistaken for another European accent?

So, people from the Irish Republic would think a mild Glasgow accent is German? How desperate can you get?

The only person who sort-of thought that was Mr Smith, the others didn't. And Mr Smith's motives in not only delaying coming forward, but making it clear who it wasn't, goodness me, certainly not his friend! have always been interesting.

It certainly has turned things on their heads. However, this all could have been put to bed years ago if Gonc had actually been a proper detective or even a half proper one.

He has so much to answer for and I hope it eats him up. I know that is a nasty thing to say but his dereliction of duty is unconscionable to Madeleine.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was the likes of them that put this man off coming forward before, if he'd seen what they do to other innocent people and their families.

Ms Tanner has been proven to be 100% credible; she reported what she saw and has stuck to her guns despite a barrage of abuse from Amaral supporters over the last few years.

And now it turns out she saw exactly what she reported seeing. That it wasn't the abductor, as everyone assumed, is not her fault.

It is entirely the fault of Amaral, who chose to invent stupid conspiracy theories instead of doing the most basic police work, and checking the night creche. That was his job, and he failed in it, totally, as he has done in just about everything he touches.
