Do they actually believe this garbage, or do they just regurgitate it to comfort themselves? Mutton should have stopped at 'I think', though evidence suggests 'thinking' is something they are incapable of.

Yes, that's very subtle. I do confess to envisaging something more pagan, involving being chained to rocks while shrieking harpies hurl abuse and false accusations for eternity, personally.
