The Pentagon’s fighter jet F-35 may not be fully operational until 2019 due to a newly discovered computer glitch. The $400 billion ultra-sophisticated jet, the most expensive in US history, was expected to enter service in 2015.

F-35 is the fifth generation combat aircraft which is designed in three variations for US Air Force, Navy and Marines to replace out of date aircraft. It was planned to join the Marines in 2015 and Air Force in 2016.

It is planned to replace the Air Force’s A-10 Warthog ground attack plane and Lockheed F-16 multirole fighter, the Navy instead of Boeing F/A-18 Hornet carrier-based fighter, and the Marines instead of Boeing AV-8B Harrier II jump-jet.

However, the most awaited plane’s main weapon will not be able to fire due to a computer glitch. The four-barreled rotary cannon for the Air Force version of the F-35 cannot function until new software is elaborated, despite jet scheduled to join the army this year.

“There will be no gun until [the Joint Strike Fighter’s Block] 3F [software], there is no software to support it now or for the next four-ish years,” an Air Force official affiliated with the F-35 program told the Daily Beast. “Block 3F is slated for release in 2019, but who knows how much that will slip?” More at link.

Here was me thinking the stupid thing was a lemon only because it couldn't fly in the rain, or something.

Now it can't fire a shot for at least four years because no-one's written a computer programme?

Have they considered using Number One Eyeball? You know, that low-tech thing that was so successful against the Luftwaffe when no-one had FOUR YEARS to faff about with computer software?

The other edge on the double edged sword of computer technology.  

How on earth did we manage in those Dark Ages before computers?

More to the point, how did a large section of society get so stupid it seems unable to function without them?

And WTF is the point of a fighter jet which only carries 200 rounds? On the rare occasions it manages to get off the ground without bursting into flames or stalling in the rain?

? SNORKELING: The first family began the New Year under mostly sunny skies as they left their rental home in the small town of Kailua, outside Honolulu, for a snorkeling excursion. They went to Hanauma Bay, a popular snorkeling spot that's closed to the public on New Year's Day, Christmas and Tuesdays. A worker at the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve confirmed the Obamas were the only party there. En route to the preserve, onlookers waved to the motorcade, took photographs and flashed the "shaka" sign. The Obamas spent more than four hours there.

? SHAVE ICE: The first family's motorcade went to Island Snow in Kailua, where Obama and his daughters ordered shave ice, a Hawaiian treat similar to a snow cone. Obama told a crowd of a few dozen onlookers, "Happy New Year, everybody!" After finishing his treat, the president, wearing a Nike pullover and flip-flops, shook hands with some of the people in the crowd. The family then returned to Obama's Kailua vacation home.

Both sides are mainly as bad as each other. I did notice quite some time ago that Boehner had no backbone, know why now.

I see Obama's State of the Union address has generally gone down like a lead balloon with most of the world. And cries of, Is he talking about the same America? from the more clear-headed American citizens. Who don't seem to share Obama's view that it's all AWESOME.
