The great Donald Debate
This embarrassment to genuine free speech is being reported live here:
http://www.theguardian.com/politics/blog/live/2016/jan/18/uk-mps-debate-donald-trump-banned-from-uk-commons-live
In Britain the Society of Black Lawyers (SBL) has submitted a formal request to the home secretary to ban Donald Trump from entering the UK on the grounds of his “unacceptable behaviours”.
It believes that officials should use the Immigration Act 1971 to claim that Trump’s presence is “not being conducive to the public good” and to stop him from coming to the UK.
A SBL spokesman said: “Refusal of entry would inform Mr Trump that the UK does not subscribe to the racist stereotyping of people of colour and generalisation of people based on their religious views, nor do we assume a particular religion parallels terrorism.”
Isn't a 'Society of Black Lawyers' raycist?

Re: The great Donald Debate
Oh, and anyone that signed this stupid petition, or supported it in any way, can no longer pull the Je suis Charlie act, as they are clearly happy to silence anyone that says things they don't agree with.
I especially include the SNP in this, as they are currently trying to purge their party of anyone that isn't toeing their islam-adoration line. Which is liable to mean losing a good many longstanding members.

So they debate Trump entering the UK but not King Salman of Saudi Arabia who beheads activists. Got it.
#trumpdebate
Quite. The hypocrisy is sickening.

SNP’s Tommy Sheppard: “How can we protect our people from hearing what this man [Trump] says”?
We're now a nation of infantile ninnies.
Yes, God forbid people hear anything that doesn't toe the party line.

This is one of the most cretinous, toe-curling things I have ever seen, Lily. They should be ashamed of their eagerness to censor anyone that doesn't fall into line with their orthodoxies - and I can think of a dozen things HoC time - and taxpayers' money - could be better spent on than this Student Union bullshit.

That Free speech is even being debated in Parliament disgusts me.
And that just about sums it up.

Re: The great Donald Debate
Totally agree, Bonny.
I saw this on that Guardian article:-
I think Donald Trump has some weird and frankly off-the-wall views. Spoken by Corbyn.
Now from Trump's spokesperson:-
Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on. According to Pew Research, among others, there is great hatred towards Americans by large segments of the Muslim population. Most recently, a poll from the Center for Security Policy released data showing “25% of those polled agreed that violence against Americans here in the United States is justified as a part of the global jihad” and 51% of those polled, “agreed that Muslims in America should have the choice of being governed according to Shariah.” Shariah authorizes such atrocities as murder against non-believers who won’t convert, beheadings and more unthinkable acts that pose great harm to Americans, especially women
Now, why are so many Brits demanding this of an American citizen who may become our next President?
ETA. Could there be any dirty fingers meddling in this e.g., an old man?

Re: The great Donald Debate
I suspect there may be, Lily, especially as the woman that started this is not a Scot, as she portrayed herself, but a 'New York activist'.
Salmond joined in because of his personal feud with Trump, no other reason - they were bessie mates until the windfarm business started. This is a complete and utter debacle, and ANY MP that supports it, is declaring that they in favour of censoring opinions they don't approve of.
They should be ashamed of themselves.

Re: The great Donald Debate
Doesn't it seem coincidental that a New York activist living in Scotland fanned the flames about this issue? Had it been a British person, it would have seemed more realistic?

Re: The great Donald Debate
Exactly - but she wasn't presented as a New York activist, the impression was given that she was just a local woman annoyed about golf courses.....

Ah....of course (pardon the pun). Then she managed to make it all about him and not his golf courses pretty darn quick? Not forgetting to make him sound beyond waycist? Or did someone else pick up the mantle?
They are terrified of what he is doing and the impact he has made here. The pundits kept saying that he wouldn't last and he has gone from strength to strength.
Bringing on the er.....heavy hitters like Jezza the Red.

Oh, Jezza's said Trump should be allowed in - he offered to take The Donald on a tour of mosques, take him for a vegetarian curry or something, in the hope he saw the error of his ways.

Re: The great Donald Debate
The upshot of all that noise is that The Donald is NOT going to be banned from the UK; there never was any danger of that, for all the hoo-ha.
But Lord, the banners haven't half shown themselves up, it was utterly mortifying to see them acting like the Stazi because someone said something they didn't like.
Made even worse by the fact that Cameron has, today, threatened to deport muslim women that won't learn English, and the EU is trying and failing to stop any more getting in.
None of them had better try the Je suis Charlie crap again, not with attitudes such as they have displayed to a horrified world today.

Re: The great Donald Debate
So it was just another exercise in wasting tax payers money? The idiots really did show themselves up. I mean, he was using his right to free speech in the country that allows it and a bunch of loons decided that that was not good enough. You could not make it up.
I do hope he becomes the next President.
PS. At least the farmer who was looking for his stray animal knows where it is.

Re: The great Donald Debate
Why I’m so embarrassed today for Britain. The same parliament that hasn’t banned a single UK citizen from returning after fighting for ISIS is seriously debating banning Trump from its shores

Re: The great Donald Debate
Surely it is a simple courtesy to the country and its people who have taken you in to at least learn the basic language? My Magyar is limited, but I can at least speak enough to make myself understood in what is considered to be the one of the most difficult languages to learn. I remember being told by a client that his mother, from Pakistan, did not speak any English as his father said she didn't need to since she would not be leaving the house save in the company of him or her sons. When I expressed concern he said it was normal practice in Pakistan where the women were there to provide the man with all the comforts, in return for which he worked and maintained a good lifestyle for her. There are many areas in London where only a few people are fluent in English - it's not just Muslims but also other races and religions who use the same practice as the man referred to above. LL
