Goebbels' secretary dies at 106

Brunhilde Pomsel, the former secretary to Nazi Germany's propaganda boss Joseph Goebbels, has died aged 106.

Her job brought her into close contact with Goebbels - one of the worst war criminals of the 20th century.

She was one of the last surviving members of staff from the Nazi hierarchy, who only spoke about her experience later in life.

In a recent documentary, she said she had known nothing of the murder of six million Jews during the Holocaust.

I've seen her, and one or two other insiders who survived the insanity, in documentaries, LL. IMO, they probably didn't know the full horror of what was happening.

They may have told themselves comforting lies about 'enemies of the state', having been brainwashed for years, or were simply trying to survive themselves by the end.

In "A German Life", which was released last year, she said she felt no guilt - "unless you end up blaming the entire German population".

It's instructive to look at, not the rallies, but the rapture with which Hitler was greeted after the fall of France and Poland - millions of Germans on the street cheering, convinced the war was over, and not one thought of the Hell that was now being inflicted on other Europeans. And little care for other Germans, whether Jewish or not, who had 'vanished'.

Well, 'ranting dwarf' is a fairly accurate description of the loathsome toad. Actively wicked? Probably not; remember, she couldn't have put together all the paperwork which was to prove what the Nazis were doing. It was only after the war that it was all collated...

She may well have suspected what was happening, and told herself comforting lies about 'resettlements' and 'work camps'. I doubt if the Soviets would have let her go if she'd been anything other than a self-deluding idiot - they weren't renowned for their tolerance of Nazis.

Well, despite the Mail headline, she didn't vanish into obscurity, she vanished into a Soviet labour camp for five years. I just don't see the Soviets releasing her if they thought she was of the slightest importance; if she could have been used as a witness, she would have been.
