HAS THE ARAB SPRING MOVED TO HUNGARY?

This is a long piece, with video and related links. This has been simmering for some time and is now beginning to come to the boil. All the changes are designed to make the ruling party untouchable, the PM wants closer links with Russia, he admires Putin! If this continues there will be another 1956 Uprising, no intervention by Russian tanks this time, just bl**dy infighting on the streets of Budapest.

Oh Lord, just what everyone doesn't need.

The problem is that the Opposition, who were in power 4 years ago, were led by a corrupt man who lied to the people about the financial state of the country in order to take power. Now the PM is a man leading a centre-right party who is in his heart of hearts a commie. He has changed the name of the country from 'The Republic of Hungary' to 'Hungary' which, for many opposed to what is happening smacks of the old name of 'Kingdom of Hungary'; they see Orban as wanting to be king in all but name, an absolute monarch with all that entails. But there are problem for him; the young people, who have lived in freedom, have travelled all over the world, and who have hear from their parents the stories of what did happen when the Soviets were overlords of the country. And there is Jobbik, a Neo-Nazi very right-wing party that people are starting to take notice of. The Opposition is in disarray, there is no leader to step forward and challenge what is happening; when the Opposition leaders joined the protests outside Parliament they were arrested.

Although I understand Hungary cannot be 'expelled' from the EU as some foreign scaremongers are predicting, it can be penalised for any infractions against EU rules. It can also be penalised by the ECB and the IMF; Hungary needs some help, though it is not in the state Greece etc are, but the present attitude of the Government is fast irritating the EU bureaucrats into threats and reprisals etc. LL
