Phone-Hacking Scandal (merged)
It is being rumoured that Clarence Mitchell's phone may have been hacked (presumably not the same one that Laffin left threatening messages on) so I am putting the story in this section.
It does seem to be far wider than was first thought:

They never stop, do they?
This is a very interesting article on the subject.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/05/phone-hacking-police-review-child-murders
It's a long article but I want to highlight these two paragraphs.
The case of Madeleine McCann is expected to be one of the first to be re-examined by detectives from Scotland Yard's new inquiry into the phone hacking, Operation Weeting.
Clarence Mitchell, Kate and Gerry McCann's spokesman, said he has been interviewed by officers from the hacking inquiry Operation Weeting, and is due to be interviewed a second time in the near future.

Just the front page so far:
There are all sorts of stories flying around tonight...but one thing is bothering me.
It's being alleged that all sorts of people were targetted; I haven't seen a sensible explanation as to WHY?

Pitchforker on Amazon:
Evie says:
So have the McCanns been hacked? Wouldn't it be funny if the NOTW had the contents of the messages etc that Kate and Gerry deleted so quickly. Wonder if that is why Clarrie is in a panic.
Funny? Why? What is 'funny' about allegations that police investigations were messed up?
Would it be 'funny' if it turned out to be not the McCanns that deleted things, but some hacker journo?
How hilarious would that be?
How hilarious is it that the Dowler family were given false hope?
Laugh - I never started.
These 'people' are beneath contempt.

Royal British Legion drops paper in hacking row
Press Association – 1 hour 4 minutes ago
Relatives of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan may have been had their phones hacked by the News of the World.
The Royal British Legion has dropped the News of the World as its campaigning partner after allegations that the paper hacked the phones of bereaved military families.
The charity said it had been "shocked to the core" by claims that a private investigator working for the tabloid illegally intercepted the voicemails of relatives of troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It announced that it had suspended all relations with the News of the World and was reviewing its advertising budget with News International, which also publishes The Sun and The Times.

I'm just reading it here, LL:
http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/Phone-Hacking-News-Of-The-World-Claims-Families-Of-Killed-Soldiers-Were-Phone-Hacking-Victims/Article/201107116025649?lpos=UK_News_Carousel_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_16025649_Phone_Hacking_News_Of_The_World%3A_Claims_Families_Of_Killed_Soldiers_Were_Phone_Hacking_Victims
If it turns out to be true - what on earth was he doing it for?
I will be honest, I am slightly suspicious about the timing of all this.

Bonny get a copy of 'Flat Earth News' by Nick Davis, and you will be gobsmacked at what the Media and Press get up to. This was written and published before the hacking became the norm, but it reads like a horror novel, except it's all true!! LL

I read that somewhere else that maybe if some messages were deleted then the investigators deleted them. And the missed "unknown calls", well an investigator would not leave a number would they.

Murdoch Folds NOTW Over Phone Hacking
Comments
This Sunday's News Of The World will be the last ever issue of the tabloid, News International chairman James Murdoch has announced.
Any advertising space in this last edition will be donated to causes and charities, Mr Murdoch added.
I would NOT like to be around Mr Murdoch right now....

Anyone who thinks the scandal currently engulfing NOTW is going to help in any way with press freedom, is living in a dream world.

Re: Phone-Hacking Scandal (merged)
Puuuuurleeeese! This has been going on in the News Media since 2003, it is not a new phenomenon, it goes back to the time when journalists were blagging BT personnel for info on customers, especially celebrities, politicians etc. Fleet Street has been giving out brown envelopes to civil servants, public servants for yonks. It became much easier when the mobile phone took over from the landline, and even easier when mobile phones began to include internet access. Remember 2006, when NOTW reporters were accused of accessing voicemail messages of Prince William, Max Clifford, Elle Macpherson, the MP Simon Hughes and assorted footballers? NOTW has used this hacking system non-stop for years, they have also paid people to rummage through celebrities' dustbins for possible titillating snippets of news, so don't tell me Murdock, his son and Rebekka Brooks didn't know it was going on? Several of their reporters have been jailed over the years, or had to resign. Dragging the McCanns into this is bl**dy moronic! But I suppose, if a meteor were to hit us and obliterate the world, at least one MM/havern member would be heard moaning "I blame the McCanns" as he/she went up in smoke! LL

It was obvious that they would link it to the McCanns. I mean, they link everything else.

They are all high-fiving and going on about the 'Curse of the McCanns' - the usual rubbish.
I have even seen some of them deciding that the NOTW staff will now reveal all the 'dirt' they imagine exists on the McCanns.
Hello? Earth to Planet Pitchforker! Given what NOTW employees are being accused of, why on earth would any 'dirt' on the McCanns NOT have been splattered all over it long ago.
I reckon this Sunday will indeed be the last NOTW.
And next Sunday will be the first Sun on Sunday.
I also predict that the press will now be LESS free, as the government have a perfect excuse for trying to regulate it.
