Gold taken from the sunken galleon ship to Spain
Two Spanish military aircraft departed today for the U.S. to collect a load of 600 thousand pieces of gold and silver, taken from a Spanish galleon that sank in the nineteenth century, the Ministry of Defence of Spain.
The treasure was discovered in 2007 along the Portuguese coast, but a U.S. court decision, the company Odyssey Marine Exploration, which withdrew from the seabed, should return it to Spain.
Investigators have established that the galleon Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes sank in 1804. The cargo of coins carried aboard weighed about 16 tons and had been minted in Peru in 1796. Currently, its value reaches over 350 million euros.
