Re: Costa Concordia: Cruise Ship 'Floating Again'
The shipwrecked Costa Concordia is floating on its own for the first time in two and a half years as one of the biggest salvage operations ever enters its most crucial phase.
"The ship is floating," chief engineer Franco Porcellacchia told scores of reporters gathered on the island of Giglio.
"It is now about one metre off the underwater platform it was lying on ... This is extremely positive."
The massive ship - twice as large as The Titanic - will be raised another metre before being shifted towards the open sea by the end of the day in a salvage operation costing $2bn (£1.17bn).
Compressed air is being pumped into 30 tanks attached to the sides of the vessel to force out seawater and refloat the vessel.
Amazing salvage work. Fingers crossed nothing goes wrong while it's being towed to Genoa.

Costa Concordia Captain Guilty Of Manslaughter
Francesco Schettino was not in court as he was sentenced to 16 years behind bars for the deaths of 32 people on board the ship.
The captain of the Costa Concordia cruise liner has been jailed for 16 years after being found guilty of multiple manslaughter.
Judges have ruled that Francesco Schettino was responsible for the deaths of 32 people after the ship smashed into rocks off Giglio island in January 2012.
The 54-year-old is expected to appeal the decision, which means it could be years before he is actually jailed for the crime. Prosecutors have requested that Schettino is imprisoned immediately.
Widely dubbed "Captain Coward" in the Italian media, the 54-year-old was captured on video abandoning the ship following the collision - but always maintained he had "tripped" into a lifeboat.
Schettino was not present as Judge Giovanni Puliatti read out the verdict at a theatre in Grosseto, which had been especially adapted into a courtroom so the victims' families could attend the trial.

Six months for each dead passenger, Lily. He did indeed get off lightly, though I'm none too sure there is a suitable punishment for wrecking his ship, abandoning his ship and passengers, and killing all those passengers.

I agree. Possibly it will be in his conscience that he suffers the most.......
