Probably because The "Ministerio Publico" is a full government-controlled body, and it's main chief - the "Procurador-Geral da Republica" is directly chosen and fired by the Portuguese Government.
That's one of the main reasons why in Portugal no big criminal connected with the government goes to jail.

Yes, of course they would, but what difference would that make?

If Amaral brought a Case of Defamation against them before he was actually convicted, then it could have been deemed to be Defamation at that time.
How his subsequent conviction would affect this, I really do not know.

I suspect that Amaral expected to get away with The Torture Allegations and filed a complaint of Defamation in that light. He believed that The Court would support him and find him Innocent of Perjury. Sadly for him it was all in writing, and while the actual Torture might be debatable in so far as who did it. There is written proof of his Perjury.
I believe that he could then have dropped The Defamation Case, but but who knows what this demented man now believes.
But if I had been asked to decide if Amaral had been Defamed at that time then I would have to say that he was. At that time. Because there was no Conviction.

But if I was Marcos Carreia then I would find 3,000 Euros a fair price to pay to have the perfidy of Goncalo Amaral exposed in Court.

Gonc was found guilty of defrauding his brother António over the house - aided and abetted by his ex-wife, apparently.

Damages were awarded to his brother. Whether Gonc has actually paid them is another matter entirely.

Gonc brought the present case claiming that his 'dignity and honour' had been offended by a report stating that he was involved in the cover-up of the torture of Leanor Cipriano.

Both the cover-up and the torture were found proven, and Gonc's sentence was upheld when he lost his appeal.

Now, if you are cheating your brother out of houses, and terrifying your wife (her complaint to the police) then you DON'T HAVE ANY DIGNITY OR HONOUR TO BEGIN WITH.

This is all Morais' fault for censoring news she doesn't like - her followers haven't a clue what is really going on.

The trial for alleged defamation of Gonçalo Amaral began today in the Court of Faro, after being postponed twice, without the presence of former Inspector of Judicial Police and the attorney and defendant Marcos Aragão Correia.
