I think this is an examination by what they call in France, A Judge de Instruction. It like a Prosecutor who decides if there is a case to answer. They must have a lot to talk about if it's taking this long.

So, this is sort-of instead of it going to the prosecutor/procurater for him/her to decide? There's a preliminary court hearing?

Sorry to sound so vague, I have no idea how this sort of system works. But it does sound as if there is an awful lot of evidence to go through - I didn't think it would go on for eight hours, never mind two days, I thought it would be like a pleading diet - a hearing.

None of them (except the dictionary I suspect) are more than about 50% accurate and usually google is best but between them you get a clue I think.

Thanks, those are useful - google does throw up some bizarre translations. I noticed long ago that it likes to turn Portuguese road accidents into 'screenings', for some odd reason.

It also sometimes turns Lisbon into London - I assume it is translating capital cities, rather than geographic locations.

I think some of Google is based on what feedback they have had.

There was a really funny one a long while ago where the name of some foreign singer (can't recall who) translated as "the devil incarnate" because there had been some kind of online game to put that as the feedback.

I sometimes have the same problems with languages at work (though there is unofficial recourse available to friends in the relevant department) but sometimes I have to use Google and other such sources like online dictionaries. I always use more than one source because I need to ensure I am as accurate as possible. None of that kind of translation can ever be used officially though. For that a professional has to be used and that is very expensive. Thankfully the world does use a lot of English.
