Five people including four thought to be British were today found dead following a gun attack at an Alpine beauty spot.
Three of the corpses were in a car parked in a forest lay-by in hills next to Lake Annecy, in France’s Haute-Savoie department.
A badly wounded teenage girl was also found in the 4x4, and she died soon afterwards.
Tragic: A young girl, who is seriously wounded, is thought to be the only survivor of the suspected gun attack in Chevaline, in the Haute-Savoie department
A fifth victim was on a push bike before being shot, and his body was found a few yards from the car.
All of the victims were riddled in bullets following what looked like a ‘deliberate assassination’, said an Annecy police source, who said the car was registered in England.
He said: ‘Police received a call from a local cyclist at around 4pm. He had stumbled across a massacre.
‘A number of bodies were found, alongside a badly wounded girl. She was taken away for treatment but later died.’
The attack took place close to Doussard, which is full of holiday lets and hugely popular with British people during the summer months.
Police have not yet confirmed the nationalities of the deceased, but they are thought to be from the UK because of evidence found in the car, said police.
No weapons were found at the scene, but gendarmes said that all those attacked had bullet wounds.
Eric Maillaud, the local prosecutor, has launched an investigation.

Re: Five dead in shooting involving UK car in France
Heaven knows what happened, it's dreadful. Earlier reports that the young girl had died may be false, according to Sky;
A teenage girl was found near the car, and initial reports said she died later from her injuries.
A local prosecutor has now said she is in a critical condition in hospital.
I know it's a cliche, but you just don't expect things like that to happen in rural French holiday areas.

Re: Five dead in shooting involving UK car in France
Oh my God, there was another child alive under the bodies.
http://news.sky.com/story/981484/alps-shooting-girl-found-alive-under-bodies
Alps Shooting: Girl Found Alive Under Bodies
A child stays hidden for eight hours under the bodies of three suspected British tourists gunned down at an Alpine beauty spot.
A four-year-old girl has been found alive under the bodies of a suspected British family shot dead in a car in the French Alps.
Public prosecutor Eric Maillaud said the child was only discovered when investigators went into the vehicle at the crime scene for a closer inspection, almost eight hours after the massacre.
He said the three victims in the BMW - a man and two women - appeared to be a family of British holidaymakers.
"As soon as the first forensics began we were able to open the vehicle, and it was at that moment we discovered the little girl that nobody had seen, because she hadn't moved, completely in shock and completely frozen," he said.
The child was not immediately discovered because the first police officers on the scene were told not to enter the car, or to move the bodies, pending the arrival of forensic experts.
The instructions were issued for fear that the bullet-pierced windows of the car would shatter, potentially compromising the work of the team.
The identity of the male victim - found at the wheel of the car and described as the father of the family, has been "almost certainly" established, the Haute-Savoie prosecutor said.
The two female victims found in the back of the vehicle, believed to be the girl's mother and grandmother, are yet to be formally identified.
The young survivor, who was hiding under the legs of the mother, was speaking English when she was found, according to Sky sources.
A helicopter equipped with a thermal camera took images of the car to check if there were any other bodies inside but also failed to identify the girl.
"She was so close to her mother they appeared as one mass," Lieutenant-Colonel Benoit Vinnemann explained.
The family were staying in a caravan in a campsite popular with UK tourists called Saint Jorioz and it is believed neighbours at the campsite alerted police when they appeared to be missing.
The killings took place in a car park in a forested area near the village of Chevaline, near Lake Annecy, a popular tourist destination in the Haute-Savoie region, in eastern France.
An eight-year-old, thought to be the surviving girl's elder sister, was found near the BMW with gunshot wounds and is in a critical condition in hospital in the city of Grenoble.
Just yards away, the body of a male cyclist also shot dead was discovered. It is thought he inadvertently cycled into the scene of the attack.
The girl was shot at least three times, according to reports quoting police sources.
The four bodies and the BMW were riddled with bullets, the reports added.
A passer-by discovered the dead cyclist and the older girl and alerted authorities at around 4pm (French time).
It is understood that no weapons were found by officers, and dozens of shell casings were found near the BMW - registered to a UK national.
Stephane Bouchet, from local newspaper Le Dauphine Libere, told Sky News a witness two miles from the car park saw a car driving very fast away from the scene around the time of the shooting.
Earlier, prosecutor Mr Maillaud said: "There is a crime scene with several dead, and we fortunately see more scenes like this in films than in real life."
He said post-mortems are due to be carried out on Thursday or Friday.
Reporting from the scene, Sky's Robert Nisbet said: "A motive for the attack is unclear.
"One theory is they may have been the victims of an armed robbery.
"A number of bullet casings were recovered at the scene, described by police as characteristic of an 'assassination'.
"Officials say the four-year-old girl is uninjured, but perhaps may provide police with some vital clues to this baffling murder."
There are 60 police officers involved in the operation and the nearby area has been sealed off as investigations continue.
Lake Annecy, known as the "little Venice of the Alps", is a popular area for swimming and water sports.

Re: Five dead in shooting involving UK car in France
Just read that again.
WHAT THE HELL WERE THE POLICE THINKING OF?
If that little girl had been injured, she would have been dead by the time they got around to finding her.
It's beyond horrible that she was trapped under the bodies of her dead relatives because the police hadn't actually LOOKED IN THE CAR.
Between announcing that one child was dead, when she was actually alive, and failing to find a survivor, this is not shaping up to be the French police's finest hour.

Re: Five dead in shooting involving UK car in France
The reporting on this is absolutely appalling with total contradictions in every article. God knows how many children are involved, or how old they were, o9r are.
French News isn't saying very much, probably because they don't know what is going on either.

God Almighty. So, they didn't think to look for survivors? What would they have done if the little girl had died because of them?
How can the officers responsible look themselves in the mirror?
When this one was posing for the cameras yesterday afternoon,
there was a four-year-old child trapped under her dead mother and granny in the car a few yards away.
How on earth can they fail to do something as basic as LOOK FOR SURVIVORS?

What a dreadful shame for the little girl. The poor, poor child.
Regarding the gendarme, no one has to take responsibility these days, do they? Plus, you have health and safety issues, political correctness, blah blah blah.

Re: Five dead in shooting involving UK car in France
Thanks, Pedro:
The father of a family murdered in a shooting in the French Alps has been named as London man Saad al Hilli.
French police said the father, mother and grandmother from Claygate, Surrey, were found dead in a BMW in eastern France.
I hope to God this is some kind of horrible, mindless spree killing, and not political.

Re: Five dead in shooting involving UK car in France
I don't particularly wish to be seen defending The Gendarmes spuriously, but they did use equipment to see if there was anyone else in the car. However, the child was so mixed up with the other bodies that they couldn't tell.
Actually, I don't like the sound of this at all. So many bullets. This sounds like an Execution, and hardly a Robbery. If they didn't want to be recognised they could always have used masks. And what would there have been to steal that was worth this mayhem?

Quite - not forgetting the poor cyclist who came along in the middle of it.
Could have been some scumbag extremists from the Middle East, or it could have been local Breivik sympathisers.
I do hope they are 'shot dead in a firefight' when the authorities catch up with them.

I can't quite tie in an Iraqi Family living in Britain, with France. Unless the family were followed from England.
But they will be caught. Hopefully they are out of France by now, so there shouldn't be a Stand Off. I think Haut Savoie is on The Swiss Border so it won't have taken them long to get out of France, but that is actually by the by.

Yes, I know we are guessing, Bonny. But what could the family have possibly had in the car that was worth stealing, and required so many bullets?
I am making a guess on an Iraqi Hit Squad. We will see, of course.

Bennett fan yoyo reckons it was all the childrens' fault;
I cant get my head round when and why she got out of the car at all.
One would have thought if she was going out to get help she would have waited until the killer was gone.
I hope there is a God, and a Satan. And that that PIG burns in Hell for eternity for daring to drag a little, injured child, into one of its sick fantasies.

Re: Five dead in shooting involving UK car in France
RENCH POLICE 'SHOULD HAVE CHECKED FOR SIGNS OF LIFE', SAY UK FORENSICS EXPERTS
Forensic experts said the first job for police who arrived at the crime scene should have been to check for survivors.
But it could be that the first officers called to the rural beauty spot in the French countryside simply 'panicked' when confronted with the horror.
In the UK, a doctor would be called to certify death - doing so, in this instance, could have alerted officers that the child was alive amidst the carnage in the car.
Jim Fraser, professor of forensic science at the University of Strathclyde, said the first responsibility for officers confronted with such a crime scene is to check the victims for signs of life.
It has been known for victims even with gunshot wounds to the head to live for hours and survive if they get emergency treatment.
He said: 'The overriding responsibility to the first responder at a crime scene, in the UK, would be to ensure that all individuals present are accounted for, their health and welfare, with an initial but thorough look at the crime scene.'
Prof Fraser said of such multiple death crimes: 'It's a pretty horrible scene - not for the faint-hearted.'
Forensic experts say it is a fiction to think murder scenes are preserved in pristine condition until they are examined by crime scene investigators.
Only after police have carried out their duty to preserve life and certify death do they 'freeze the scene'.

Nothing new on French News. The bodies have been removed and so has the car. The two children are under armed guard.
