Policewoman Killed During Wanted Man Arrest
An unarmed female police officer has been killed and another is critically injured during the arrest of a murder suspect.
A female police officer has died after being injured during the arrest of wanted man Dale Cregan, in Manchester, and another officer has been seriously injured.
Cregan, 29, was being sought in connection with separate gun and grenade attacks that killed a father and son.
The officers, both female and unarmed, were injured during the arrest of Cregan in Tameside, Greater Manchester.
They were attending what police have called a "routine incident" at Abbey Gardens in Hattersley.
Shortly after the policewomen were shot, Cregan walked into a police station and gave himeself up. He has now been arrested on suspicion of murdering a police officer - as well as the original charges.
Stuart Littleford, the editor of local newspaper Saddleworth News, told Sky News local residents had reported hearing "a number of shots fired".
Witnesses say up to 13 shots were fired during the incident.
The chief constable of Greater Manchester Police described it as "a tragic day for the whole force".
It was a "heart-breaking time for the officers' families and colleagues," he added.
A £50,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest of Cregan who police wanted to speak to about the murders of David Short, 46, and his son Mark, 23.
David Short was killed at his home in Folkestone Road East, Clayton, on August 10, while Mark was gunned down at the Cotton Tree pub in Droylsden on May 25.
A gunman walked into the pub and fired shots which injured three other men.
A post-mortem examination showed Mark Short died from a gunshot wound to the neck.
Four men have been charged in connection with his murder and are due to enter pleas at Manchester Crown Court in November.
Earlier this month a 33-year-old man appeared at Manchester Crown Court charged with the gun and grenade murder of David Short.

As well as been saddened by the loss of life, why on earth were two unarmed women trying to arrest someone who has - allegedly - been conducting some kind of gang warfare with grenades, etc?
In the US, a full SWAT team would have been sent for him.

Re: Policewoman Killed In Manchester During Wanted Man Arrest
The second policewoman has now died:
http://news.sky.com/story/986584/two-policewomen-killed-in-manchester-shooting
Heartbreaking.
I can only think the women responded to what appeared to be something ordinary, a domestic or squabbling neighbours, and got faced with this creature:
There is chatter that he again used a grenade.
Thank God he handed himself in before anyone else died, but that is no consolation to the dead women's families and colleagues.

They can't have known what they were walking into, surely? I can't believe two unarmed women would be sent after that psycho.

Re: Policewoman Killed In Manchester During Wanted Man Arrest
Sounds like he set a trap for the Police. A routine incident sounds like he called about something trivial and sat there waiting.

I am generally against the death penalty, but I don't think too many would mourn if he was put down like a rabid dog.
And it's safe enough to say he's guilty of this, as he gave himself up.

Sounds like he wanted to go out in a blaze of glory...then chickened out as the women were unarmed and he knew the Police would want him alive

Big hero, he killed two unarmed women - that's scummy even by criminal standards. No-one in jail is going to look at him as a hard man for that.

Sounds like they were called to reports of a burglary or something. No doubts called in by him or the person hiding him.

Re: Policewoman Killed In Manchester During Wanted Man Arrest
I noticed that, although it is being lumped in as 'Manchester', the area seems to be semi-rural, with fields behind the houses.
I have no idea if that will turn out to be relevant.
I don't see him living too long in jail. There is whatever this gang feud has been about - and even criminals have standards. Killing unarmed female officers is not the mark of a tough guy.

This photo's from the Mail:
It looks to be quite a nice area it happened in? Which I suppose could be one more reason for the policewomen not to expect to be faced with him?

Sounds if the house was booby trapped. If so then even more of a coward. Police killers used to be praised in prison...not now. He will be a marked man

I have no doubt he will be targetted in jail, mf. He'll be seen as a coward. He didn't go down snarling at a SWAT team, he murdered a couple of unarmed women. Even criminals have some standards.

It is a reasonably pleasant area, the actual street is part of what was a council estate but has largely been bought out now. It is about fifteen miles east of the centre of Manchester and is just about the last estate and major residential area before you get up onto the moors and into the Peak District National Park. Not a bad place to hide out if you are on the run I suppose.

Re: Policewoman Killed In Manchester During Wanted Man Arrest
Policewomen Shot Dead In Manchester Named
Two unarmed police officers who were killed after being called to investigate an apparent burglary are named.
One of the country's most wanted men is believed to have lured two unarmed female constables to their deaths today.
Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, arrived at an apparent burglary at an address in Manchester where it is believed a grenade was let off and 13 bullets fired.
Police described it as a "an act of cold blooded murder", adding: "It's impossible to fathom such an evil act."
Sir Peter Fahey, chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, said fugitive Dale Cregan or someone else made a call alleging a burglary had been committed at an address in Hattersley and when the officers arrived they were attacked with a gun and a grenade.
Sir Peter said Miss Bone was a "calm, gentle woman", an "excellent bobby" and had been in the middle of planning her wedding.
He also paid tribute to Miss Hughes, describing her as a "chatterbox" and a "great bobby" who was "always smiling".
Speaking at a news conference, Sir Peter descibed what happened: "We believe that Dale Cregan was in a house in Abbey Gardens overnight and at some point this morning has either himself made a call or have somebody else make a call in reporting a burglary…
"So, as would be routine, two unarmed officers were sent to the scene. When they arrived it appears then that Cregan emerged into the road and killed these two officers.
"A firearm was used and a grenade was also used."
Police said Fiona Bone had served in the force for five years. She had spoken to her partner in the morning about sending out wedding invites.
Sir Peter said: “When she joined the force she was quiet and reserved but then came out of her shell."
He described her as “calm, collected and professional.”
Nicola Hughes, who had been with the force for three years, was a karate enthusiast and was described her as "bubbly" and "always smiling, even after a night shift".
After the attack, the fugitive, already wanted in connection with separate gun and grenade attacks that killed a father and son, gave himself up at Hyde police station in Grreater Manchester.

Something has to be done about FB and twitter; if they won't regulate themselves, it is going to end up being done for them.

Re: Policewoman Killed In Manchester During Wanted Man Arrest
I would expect and hope the police to absolutely throw the book at the vile moron who set up that page.
But as you say the very fact that these companies are unable to police themselves WILL lead to other authorities doing it for them.
There is a "conspiracy theory" which may not be as crazy as it sounds that the companies are being manipulated (from inside, outside or both) to create a situation (specifically creating a climate in which public opinion demands something is done) in which it becomes inevitable that regulation is imposed. There is no question that all governments from the most liberal European through those like our own and that of the USA to the most dictatorial would benefit and prefer greater regulation of the Internet.

Re: Policewoman Killed In Manchester During Wanted Man Arrest
Why did this man do this? He had nothing to gain. Was it actually him who did it? And before you all holler against me, what was the point when there was some legal doubt about the previous incident?
In my experience Criminals don't go out of their way to stitch themselves up when there is absolutely no need..
There is more to this.
