Britain's top black woman judge Constance Briscoe is arrested at her home



Constance Briscoe, 55, was questioned by Kent Police and bailed pending further inquiries
She cannot sit as a judge while being investigated, Office for Judicial Complaints confirms


The 55-year-old was questioned by Kent Constabulary before being bailed pending further inquiries.

‘A 55-year-old woman was arrested in Clapham, south London, on Saturday October 6. She was interviewed by officers,' Kent Police said in a statement.

Her arrest means that she will not be able to sit as a judge while being investigated concerning matters which cannot be revealed for legal reasons.

A spokeswoman for the Office for Judicial Complaints said in a statement: ‘The Lord Chief Justice and Lord Chancellor have suspended Constance Briscoe from the judiciary pending the outcome of the police investigation into the allegations against her. It would be inappropriate to comment further whilst the investigation is active.’

Ms Briscoe has been a controversial figure and was unsuccessfully sued by her own mother over revelations in her autobiography.

I am none too sure if this sheds any light on it, but apparently, she was about to be a prosecution witness in some case involving a politician and a speeding ticket:

It's probably got nothing to do with it, the whole thing is bizarre.

Kent police are the force who investigated the Huhne points case.

Economist Vicky Pryce is reported to have confided in the judge, who is a family friend, that Mr Huhne asked her to say she was at the wheel of the car when it broke the speed limit in 2003.

Miss Briscoe last year said she remembered the conversation during which she advised Miss Pryce to tell Mr Huhne to ‘go away and come clean’.

This led to her becoming a prosecution witness.

Huhne trial suspended Friday 5th Oct 2012 until 14th Jan 2013.

One would think so, Greenink, unless she has done something truly dreadful, which has nothing to do with Huhne? The whole thing is bizarre.

Well the only reason given for the adjournment of the case till January was "legal reasons" and within 24 hours Judge Briscoe had been picked up by Kent Police. Whats the chance of that happening?

I don't know enough about the intricacies of the law to really judge, Greenink. It does seem to be connected; would she have had to do something truly dreadful, like commit perjury, for this to be happening?

No similar incidents come to my mind....

Thats a possibility and the "legal reasons" in the Huhne case might just be that the chief prosecution witness is not available because she is tied up in something else.

Reading that, isn't it odd that not only did Aldridge and Briscoe have a marital home in Clapham and have bought a home in France but he still had and is now using his Central London apartment and Kent Country house. Thats a lot of houses for a couple of lawyers.

And then, of course there is the whole spectre of the shenanigans between this 27 year old, 55 year old and 75 year old. All members (two of them extremely senior) of our legal profession.

I can't help wondering if she cut up his suits or threw paint on his Range Rover. Or perhaps she ran off with The Solid Fuel Aga. I might do that. Would have done if I had been given half a chance. I was positively incensed about my precious Aga.
