North Sea Rescue As Helicopter Ditches
4:45pm UK, Monday 22 October 2012
The helicopter came down 14 miles west of Fair Isle
All 19 people on board a helicopter which ditched in the North Sea have been safely accounted for, say rescuers.
Sky News Scotland Correspondent James Matthews said: "This was a helicopter carrying rig workers..
"It carried out a controlled ditching between Orkney and Shetland, just west of Fair Isle. The pilot came down low and sent out a Mayday before hitting the water."
Three lifeboats were launched, from Kirkwall, Orkney, and Aith and Lerwick in Shetland, the RNLI said.
Three helicopters were also involved in the search, co-ordinated by Shetland Coastguard. Other vessels were on the scene, 14 miles west of Fair Isle.
The helicopter was carrying an oil crew change, the coastguard said. It is not known if there are any casualties.
A statement from CHC Helicopter said: "We can confirm that there has been an incident involving one of our aircraft in the North Sea, approximately 32 miles south-west of Shetland. Exact details of the incident, which happened at approximately 3.30pm are not yet known."

A rescue operation has been launched after a helicopter carrying 19 people ditched in to the North Sea.
The CHC aircraft landed in the water in a controlled ditching on Monday afternoon.
It is believed the Super Puma EC225 ditched as it was involved in transporting rig workers in the area.
The coastguard confirmed the helicopter had come down 32 miles south west of Sumburgh Head.
It is unknown yet if anyone involved in the ditching was injured at around 3.20pm. All passengers on the aircraft have been accounted for.
Three rescue helicopters and three RNLI lifeboats have been sent to the scene of the ditching.
Some of those on board the helicopter have been rescued by the Danish Nord Nightingale tanker, which is close to the site where the Super Puma came down.
A Scottish Government spokesman said: "We are aware that a helicopter has ditched in the North Sea, south of Sumburgh and we understand that all 19 people on board are now safe and well following the dispatch of emergency services to the site.
"Scottish ministers are being kept updated on the situation and we will release further information when it becomes known."
Helicopter company CHC has a base in Aberdeen and describes itself as the "world’s largest helicopter services company" specialising in transporting workers to and from offshore oil and gas platforms.
A CHC spokesperson said: "The appropriate authorities have been informed and the company's incident management team has been mobilised.

Re: Helicopter ditches in North Sea
It certainly looks like it, fingers crossed, Lily. Oilrig workers have to go through endless training just in case their chopper ditches like this, and also have to wear survival suits, etc., in flight, so they are well prepared for something like this, which happily rarely happens.
