British detectives believe that a team of cleaners using a white van may hold the key to the whereabouts of missing toddler Madeleine McCann, who disappeared while staying in a holiday apartment with her parents in Praia da Luz.
The possible new lead, reported in the Daily Mail in the UK, has come from British police reviewing the evidence in a routine procedure as part of Operation Grange, which was set up by the Metropolitan Police two years ago at the request of Prime Minister David Cameron in response to an appeal by Madeleine’s parents.
It is understood that apartment owners have been asked about a van with six to eight cleaners operating in the resort at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance six years ago.
They are interested in interviewing anybody who might have had means of access to apartments in the resort at the time.
Three years ago, a Portuguese man told police he had seen a girl he believed to be Madeleine in the back of a white van. He said there was a couple of people he believed to be gypsies standing by the van.
Normally, the Ocean Club Resort’s own cleaners worked in the apartments, but several property owners used cheaper British cleaners who advertised on cards in local supermarkets, said the report in the Daily Mail.
The British authorities are interested in any information from local residents who may be able to throw extra light on the new line of inquiry.
