Big Ben To Be Silent For Thatcher Funeral
The bells of Big Ben and the Great Clock at Westminster will be silent for the funeral of Baroness Thatcher
Oh, FFS! How DARE they?
ETA, this has gone beyond a joke - we've no business laughing at North Korea when our government is pulling stunts like this.

Re: MARGARET THATCHER HAS DIED
Having just watched the funeral procession, I think the reason for the silencing of Big Ben was because it is a very loud bell, St Paul's Bell is far quieter and would actually have been drowned by Big Ben every 15 minutes. It is only off for the actual time of the funeral. I was glad to see that, despite all the threats, the British innate sense of respect for the dead was present as the gun carriage passed. It would have looked bad across the world if some of the threats to disrupt the funeral had in fact materialised. I accept many people disliked, even hated her, and many feel she should just have been cremated and scattered, but I was taught to have respect for the dead, as I was also taught to have respect for the living. Perhaps such a ceremonial send off was not really appropriate, who I am to judge? Just my thoughts, nothing more; I am given to understand that Christians believe judgment lies in the hands of a higher being. Sorry, not preaching, just saying. Lamplighter

I have rarely seen such a bunch of crooks and chancers gathered in one spot as is sitting in St Paul's right this minute, LL.

I wouldn't know, but then I'm not into politics etc. I assume all political parties are represented then? LLbb1 wrote:I have rarely seen such a bunch of crooks and chancers gathered in one spot as is sitting in St Paul's right this minute, LL.

Re: MARGARET THATCHER HAS DIED
Yes, they're all there, LL, some of them no doubt because it goes with the job, others, well, who knows?
Bliar, Major, all of them are present - it's like a roll call of People Who Make You Want To Throw Things At The Telly.
So many close ups of Mark Thatcher are doing nothing for my blood pressure. Carol's OK, and fairly normal - he is another matter entirely.
I absolutely refuse to call him ' Sir' - that he should have inherited the title is another thing that puts my blood pressure up.

I can usually watch these things out of historic interest, if nothing else, LL, but this just feels....wrong?
Apart from anything else, I have doubts about the sincerity of some of the mourners.

Re: MARGARET THATCHER HAS DIED
I assumed there would be a lot of people watching the cortege after it left St Pauls, but there doesn't seem to be anyone, away from the cathedral. How odd!
ETA, it is also travelling at a fair lick for a funeral cortege....

Re: MARGARET THATCHER HAS DIED
I went to cook some rice so I missed the hearse leaving. It is going to the Chelsea Hospital where the ashes of her husband were scattered to be cremated and scattered there too. I also think the sincerity of certain 'mourners' is false, but it is over now and we can move onwards and upwards!! Re: MARGARET THATCHER HAS DIED
It's going to the crematorium first, LL:
At mid-day Lady Thatcher was carried from the splendour of St Paul's to be taken away to Mortlake in south-west London for cremation.
I think the great and good are off for sherry and teacakes at the Mansion House now?

Pity that Jimmy Savile couldn't make it due to being dead, he would have made a colourful change from all those grey people wearing black.

That was a wonderful show.
Just had a sad thought. I used to have Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher Spitting Image squeaky toy things on my desk. I threw them away a few years ago.

Re: MARGARET THATCHER HAS DIED
It was of interest at the time it was happening, now the whole episode is past, gone, and becoming rather boring. We've had all the 'remember whens' pre the funeral, I just hope it's not going to go on ad infinitum. LL

Re: MARGARET THATCHER HAS DIED
I've watched a few YouTubes over the past few days, Lily, I'd forgotten how funny they were. I doubt if a series like that would even be made now.
They got John Major badly wrong, though....
Whoever would have guessed Mr Grey was having a torrid fling with Eggwina? I still recall how, well, ill, I felt when that came out....
