If I were running a global conspiracy, I’d do it from a hollowed-out volcano on a remote island rather than a hotel near Watford. People might notice. So perhaps the Bilderberg Group’s decision to hold its annual conference in Hertfordshire last week was a devilish ruse to obscure its purpose.

Thus, I imagine, ran the reasoning of the protesters outside. The Bilderberg Group has become a staple in the mythology of conspiracy theorists, who see in it a shadowy world government. It’s easy to laugh at people such as Alex Jones, an American talk-show host who erupted on the BBC’s Sunday Politics. But they aren’t funny.

In a 1964 essay called The Paranoid Style in American Politics, Richard Hofstadter traced the history of this intellectual subculture. Exemplified in Hofstadter’s day by McCarthyism, it combines delusions of persecution and belief in an all-encompassing threat.

Real plots do happen. Recall Suez and Watergate. But conspiracy theorists go far beyond that truism. They believe that their enemy can (in Hofstadter’s words) “manufacture the mechanism of history itself or deflect the course of history in an evil way”. Their fantasies are immune to evidence. To explain away inconvenient facts, they simply invent another twist. As the scope of the imaginary conspiracy spreads, it eventually encompasses a people charged throughout history with demonic powers and malevolent designs — the Jews.

All conspiracy theories are essentially an instinct rather than a set of discrete beliefs. Campaigners in the 9/11 Truth movement openly espouse Holocaust denial and blame Israel for the destruction of the twin towers. Joseph Sobran, a prominent advocate of the notion that the works of Shakespeare were written by the Earl of Oxford, also addressed a conference of Holocaust deniers.

These perverse beliefs aren’t mere eccentricities. They grip people who treat historical interpretation as a personal psychodrama. A free society doesn’t repress conspiracy theorists, but has a powerful interest in inoculating itself against their methods. That requires the distasteful task of addressing their charges. People who lack a concept of evidence can’t be debated with, but their way of reasoning should be exposed by journalists.
