Portuguese police have set up a new team to work in conjunction with peers from Britain’s Metropolitan Police force to support a renewed investigation into the case of the disappeared Madeleine McCann, Scotland Yard confirmed Friday.

Six officers from the Faro police force have been delegated to the task of supporting "Operation Grange", set up following the intervention of British Prime Minister David Cameron, and in response to a letter sent out to 31 countries requesting clarification about persons and phone calls of potential relevance to the child’s fate.

"This is a dedicated team of new persons. We have overcome the first set of juridical obstacles and the investigation is heading down the right path," said Assistant Commissioner Marc Rowley.

Rowley not only made a point of stressing the good level of understanding existing but also acknowledged that different legal frameworks did represent a complication and hindering the speed of progress.

The press conference also revealed that with further progress a “small number of officers” might be deployed in Portugal.

Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, heading the 37 strong team allocated to this case, explained that the current priority focused on discovering the owners of mobile phones identified as active in the zone at the time of the child’s disappearance.

"These are persons who were within a certain distance of the place of disappearance and of whom there are grounds for suspicion” explained Redwood.

Scotland Yard, back working on the case for the last year, is confident of having found “new information” in amongst the 40,000 documents and clues gathered by the Portuguese and British police forces in addition to eight different private detective firms.

Within the scope of this renewed surge of attention to the fate of Madeleine McCann, who disappeared just before her fourth birthday on 3rd May 2007 from Praia da Luz, in the Algarve, the BBC is to carry a renewed appeal for information on October 14th before also being shown in Germany and the Netherlands and probably Ireland.

Morais and co will be beside themselves with rage that the PJ and the Yard are working together amicably - without documents blowing out windows and landing in the ample lap of Duarte Levy.

It's a good sign that that CdM crap from police sources was stamped on so quickly yesterday, too.
