Many more will be unreported, not least because of ingrained attitudes and the light sentences the courts hand out in Portugal - light even by UK standards.

The number of cases of sexual abuse involving children in Portugal has risen over the past year, according to the Annual Internal Security Report.
Last year the report registered 1,227 cases of child abuse, which is higher than the 1,074 cases registered in 2012.
Child abuse was also one of the most common crimes committed last year, according to the report, which also noted a rise in sexual offences involving teenagers.
