Gerry Adams Arrested For Murder

Gerry Adams is being questioned over the 1972 murder of Jean McConville
Mr Adams, 65, a former MP for West Belfast, went to Antrim police station by prior arrangement with officers.
He issued a statement after the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) announced an arrest had been made.
In it, he said: "Last month I said that I was available to meet the PSNI about the Jean McConville case.
Jean McConville was murdered in 1972
"While I have concerns about the timing, I am voluntarily meeting with the PSNI this evening.
"As a republican leader I have never shirked my responsibility to build the peace. This includes dealing with the difficult issue of victims and their families.
"I believe that the killing of Jean McConville and the secret burial of her body was wrong and a grievous injustice to her and her family.
"While I have never disassociated myself from the IRA and I never will, I am innocent of any part in the abduction, killing or burial of Mrs McConville."
Mr Adams has rejected allegations made by former republican colleagues that he had a role in ordering the IRA killing in 1972.
No one has ever been charged with the murder.
There have been a series of arrests in connection with the investigation in recent weeks after a court decision in the US which ordered a university in Boston to hand over recorded interviews with veteran republicans in which they discussed the murder.
Last month, 77-year-old Ivor Bell was charged with aiding and abetting the murder.
Boston College interviewed a number of former paramilitaries on the understanding transcripts would not be published until after their deaths, but that was overturned by the court ruling last year.
A PSNI spokesman said: "Detectives from the serious crime branch investigating the abduction and murder of Jean McConville in 1972 have arrested a 65-year-old man in Antrim.
"The suspect is currently being interviewed by detectives at the serious crime suite in Antrim police station."
Mrs McConville, a widow and mother of ten, was dragged away from her children in her home in the Divis flats, west Belfast, by an IRA gang of up to 12 men and women after she was accused of passing information to the British Army.
An investigation by the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman later rejected any claims that she was an informer.
The 37-year-old was shot in the back of the head and she became one of the "Disappeared" - someone abducted and killed by republican paramilitaries and left in unmarked graves - after her body was buried 50 miles from her home.
The IRA did not admit to carrying out her murder until 1999 and her remains were not discovered until August 2003 on Shelling Hill beach in Co Louth.

I am rather surprised that particular can of worms has been reopened again. Not that I have any objections to the woman's killers being brought to justice, I hasten to add.

Quite, Lily. I am sure everyone realised that some incidents were consigned to history in the interests of future peace - but 300 deaths? Full story here:
