Madeleine McCann search: April Jones' gran tells of heartache Kate and Gerry McCann will be suffering
Jun 03, 2014 22:30 By Martin Fricker, Lucy Thornton, Luke Traynor
Linda Smith spoke after officers sent in the same cadaver dogs they used to hunt for the five-year-old, who was killed by cowardly thug Mark Bridger in October 2012
The gran of murdered schoolgirl April Jones has told of the heartache Kate and Gerry McCann will be suffering as police step up the search for their missing daughter.
Linda Smith spoke after officers sent in the same cadaver dogs they used to hunt for the five-year-old, who was killed by cowardly thug Mark Bridger in October 2012.
Spaniels Tito and Muzzy spent the day scouring scrubland close to where Madeleine vanished in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz in 2007.
Police were also seen digging at the site. Linda, 63, said: “I feel for the McCanns. I’m sure they are going through agony.
"In a way, they won’t want Madeleine to be found , but if they do, at least they will have some closure.
“The dogs were out a lot looking for April. They were very useful.
“It was a comfort to see the huge teams looking for our granddaughter and the skills at their disposal. I’m sure Maddie’s parents want to know what happened to their little girl.”
April’s body has never been never found since she went missing in Machynlleth, Powys, where the family lived .
Bridger, 47, is serving a whole-life life tariff for her abduction, murder and perverting the course of justice.
Kerry Needham, whose son Ben vanished on the island of Kos in 1991, also gave support to Kate, 46, and 45-year-old Gerry.
In October 2012 she had to endure the agony of watching specialist British police dig up farmland where the 21-month-old was last seen.
Kerry, 42, said: “It is the most horrific thought and feeling that any parent can go through , knowing that police are going to be digging up ground and there is a chance your child could be buried there, it’s horrendous.
“I was 99% sure they would not find Ben. But there was always that 1% chance they could and that’s very hard to cope with.
"There are some similarities between Ben’s case and Madeleine’s. My thoughts are with her parents.”
The dogs and their handlers – regarded as the most highly-skilled team in the UK – were joined by Britain’s leading search expert, from Sussex Police, who is helping coordinate the unprecedented police operation on Portuguese soil.
Tito and Muzzy both have a powerful sense of smell that helps them locate human remains, blood and fluid a human would be unable to trace.
The dogs, who always work as a pair, have been known to find bodies 20 years after they vanished and can even detect people underwater.
They are taught from the age of 18 months using pig carcasses, which are the closest to humans.
Handler Sally Richards said recently: “They are trained to find anything from tiny specks of blood which are hard for the human eye to see to a full-sized victim, and everything in between.”
The dog search came on the second day of the UK police operation in Praia da Luz to look for clues as to what happened to Madeleine.
She was three when she disappeared as her parents, of Rothley, Leics, dined out in a nearby tapas bar with friends.
Forensic archaeologists and anthropologists also worked alongside the British teams from Operation Grange – set up in 2011 by the Met to re-investigate the case – on the patch of scrubland.
It is 300 yards from the holiday apartment where the McCanns were staying.
The area is known locally as The Mound and is a hangout for alcoholics and drug users.
Two Met officers used shovels to lift corrugated iron covering a hole on the site.
They then removed piles of dirt from the hole and surrounding area, which had earlier been cleared of undergrowth.
Earth was placed in a bucket and carried off.
The Sussex Police expert, who has not been named, was spotted advising Scotland Yard officers as they carried out fingertip searches in undergrowth and on rubbish-strewn barren areas nearby.
Det Chief Insp Andy Redwood, who is overseeing the operation, stood watching pensively.
The archaeologists and anthropologists, from the firm Alecto Forensics in Preston, Lancs, took soil samples from a taped off area and mapped the terrain.
According to the company’s website, forensic archaeology and anthropology are “essential components in an investigation that involves clandestine burials”.
Its experts have previously helped identify victims of the 9/11 terror attacks in New York and the 7/7 London bombings.
Four workers used chainsaws and strimmers to cut back swathes of undergrowth to clear the way for the search, which ended at 6pm.
Local police officers on horseback patrolled the site and Portuguese detectives filmed the entire operation.
Sources said last night the hunt could be extended to two more sites in Praia da Luz before the end of the week.
The Scotland Yard team have approval from officials in Lisbon to conduct searches until the end of the week.
The time frame of the operation is unlikely to be extended.
British police have made numerous trips to Portugal but this week is the first time they have actively carried out searches.
It is the biggest operation linked to Madeleine’s disappearance since the initial search wound down a month after she went missing.
The UK team is investigating a string of sex attacks by a lone male paedophile on young British girls while they were on holiday in the Algarve.
They are looking at nine assaults and three “near misses” on youngsters aged six to 12 between 2004 and 2006, including one in 2005 on a 10-year-old girl at Praia da Luz.
Hundreds of people have already made contact with officers in response to appeals for help to find the vile pervert.

It sounds like they are doing a thorough job.
Of course anyone who has been through similar will feel deep compassion for the McCanns. April's grandmother sounds so wonderful.

Madeleine McCann Sniffer dogs used in April Jones case enlisted in search
BRITISH detectives hunting for Madeleine McCann began digging yesterday on a patch of scrubland in the Portuguese resort close to where the little girl was last seen.
Scotland Yard officers, in a dramatic new phase of the cold-case review, used shovels to clear weeds and soil around a half-buried sheet of corrugated iron covering a hole at the hilly coastal site.
Forensic archaeologists guided police to ensure potential evidence was not destroyed or overlooked during the painstaking work.
Sniffer dogs, which helped in the April Jones murder inquiry, spent the day scouring the four-acre wasteland overlooking the Atlantic.
Tito and Muzzy, two specialist cadaver dogs from South Wales Police, worked with handlers Sally Richards and David Brake combing the area around the iron sheet.
When search teams moved in on their hands and knees to examine the rubbish-strewn patch, the springer spaniels worked elsewhere
When search teams moved in on their hands and knees to examine the rubbish-strewn patch, the springer spaniels worked elsewhere.
Officers in Met Police uniforms carefully sifted through the soil before collecting more samples – under the guidance of an archaeologist from Alecto Forensic Services and two Portuguese officials.
Experts from Preston-based Alecto worked on identifying victims from the 9/11 Twin Towers attacks and the 7/7 London bombings.
One of the country’s leading search advisers is also part of the operation. The unnamed officer, from Sussex Police, was also involved in the search for April.
The five-year-old, from Machynlleth, Powys, Wales, disappeared in 2012. Her body has never been found but local man Mark Bridger was convicted of her murder after Tito and Muzzy led police to fragments of her skull in his wood-burner.
The Scotland Yard team are also thought to be using ground-penetrating radar equipment. Mechanical diggers are on standby.
The area of land is being guarded day and night by Portuguese police. Local officers yesterday patrolled the site on horseback while others used German shepherd dogs. Forensic tents have been set up at a number of areas.
The land is a short walk from the Ocean Club apartment where Madeleine, three, was staying with her parents Kate, 46, and Gerry, 45, when she disappeared in May 2007.
It has been searched previously after an Irish family, on holiday in the Algarve resort, reported seeing a man carrying a young girl on the night Madeleine vanished. He was heading towards the wasteland.
Satellite images of the land have been used in the hunt by the Yard team, headed by Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood.
The unprecedented investigation by British police on foreign soil follows months of negotiations with Portuguese authorities.
The estimated £6million cold-case review, Operation Grange, was set up in 2011 on the orders of Prime Minister David Cameron.
Searches could also involve two other sites in the same resort. The McCanns are being kept informed by Scotland Yard.
Springer spaniels involved in grim task.
THE Met Police had the pick of the UK’s victim recovery dogs, including its own, but selected Tito and Muzzy.
The seven-year-old English springer spaniels from South Wales Police were used in the hunt for April Jones.
The dogs’ experience makes them suited to work on the Praia da Luz scrubland. They have found bodies 20 years after they went missing.
All dogs have an amazing sense of smell but victim recovery dogs are usually from hunting breeds because of their acute abilities.

Meanwhile, the haters are still in a frenzy of one-handed typing and ghoulery. They appear to be having a competition to see which one can conjure up the most disgusting, prurient speculation.
So, no change there.

in my opinion, nothing will be found, this is just another theory who will soon be discarded. because Scotland Yard continues to look for a living, findable Madeleine McCann.

Re: Mirror: April Jones' gran speaks of heartache McCanns will be suffering
Madeleine searches could be widened this week
BY CARRIE-MARIE BRATLEY, IN NEWS · 03-06-2014 15:04:00 · 0 COMMENTS
Police groundwork in Praia da Luz being carried out by British and Portuguese officers as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann could, during the course of this week, be widened to include two new search sites.
This was confirmed earlier today (3 June) by a Portuguese police source who also said the fourth and latest International Letter of Request – which arrived in Portugal last week and is believed to relate to the potential new search-sites – “is either already in the hands of the PJ police or will be very soon.”
A spokesperson from the Attorney’s General Office told The Portugal News this afternoon that the letter is “currently being analysed by the Public Prosecutor in conjunction with the PJ police with a view to it being executed.”
Should new searches be given the go-ahead, ground action on the sites would be carried out simultaneously during the course of this week.
The news comes as Welsh police dogs were brought in this morning to help with the current search, which takes place seven years after the toddler went missing from the hotel resort where she was staying, in May 2007.
Two South Wales Police specialist dog-handlers and Victim Detection Dogs were deployed to assist with the investigation.
Both dogs were deployed during the search for five-year-old April Jones who went missing in Machynlleth, Wales, in October 2012.
The force said: “The officers are working as part of a small team of team of British police officers, led by Metropolitan Police Service in conjunction with the Portuguese authorities
The dogs, both seven years old, are English Springer Spaniels, called Tito and Muzzy.
According to South Wales police the practical application of Victim Detection Dogs can be divided into two areas: locating concealed bodies and disaster victim detection.
“They can be deployed in a wide a variety of locations as possible. Examples of locations will include buildings, open areas and vehicles”, it was explained.
This morning British police officers could been seen in the swathes of scrubland just west of Praia da Luz’s main town square, on their hands and knees scouring small sections of ground.
Just before noon a yellow van belonging to the Sapadores Florestais (forest guards) also arrived at the plot currently being inspected, the only site which as yet has been approved by Portuguese authorities.
It is thought to have been carrying local Parish council workers whose role is to clear areas of the land to aid the investigation.
Madeleine McCann went missing from the Ocean Club resort on 3 May 2007, then aged three.

Many thanks, Pedro, that is rather what I expected - I read somewhere that locals had been using the wasteland to bury dead animals, so I suspected that was what had turned up.

I would be surprised if anything related to Madeleine's disappearance is found there, Pedro.
Should it be, it means Gonzo's incompetence during the original investigation is beyond measure. I actually find it hard to believe than even he could be so incompetent as not to have the waste ground searched.

Sez a hounder:
Growing up in PdL, I would bet Robert Murat knew these parts like the back of his hand.
A reasonable point. Unlike Mutton's reply:
As did keen joggers Kate and Gerry - probably more so than the locals, who are probably too busy working to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area
What? That has to win a prize for Compulsive Pitchforking and Stupidity.
Incidentally, the 'surrounding area' doesn't strike me personally as being particularly beautiful; PDL itself looks like a bog-standard concrete holiday complex, with barren bits of waste ground here and there.

Thank you, Pedro. Nothing at all surprising for what was a semi-rural area before the arrival of the ex-pats and the concrete mixers.

Re: Mirror: April Jones' gran speaks of heartache McCanns will be suffering
It isn't actually a very prepossessing place , is it. Not anywhere near top notch. It was probably nicer as a fishing village.
No doubt the owner was saving that site for more concrete.
I was quite shocked when I saw how spartan 5A is, compared to Val de Lobo where the houses are beautifully furnished and so elegant.
As you know, some friends of mine own a Villa on the outskirts of Praia da Luz, which is probably a bit more up to scratch if their house here is anything to go by. But we never talk about Madeleine anymore because even they who are really nice people, were a bit pissed off by it all. Actually, it was Andrew who told me all the scrub land near by, back in 2007, and how effing useless The Police are and ever have been.
No doubt the owner was saving that site for more concrete.
I was quite shocked when I saw how spartan 5A is, compared to Val de Lobo where the houses are beautifully furnished and so elegant.

It's not the most attractive resort I've ever seen...
As you say, it was probably nicer when it was a fishing village.

Have you noticed what all the haters are ignoring in the Mirror story?
They are taught from the age of 18 months using pig carcasses, which are the closest to humans.

It has no charm whatsoever.
ETA: I noticed that in the article last night. They all ignore what they don't want to know which makes them er...pig ignorant themselves.

I missed it, but apparently, Murat was on ITV news, expressing sympathy for the way the McCanns must be feeling right now.
Naturally, that was all it took for the haters to start on him.
my support for him end's NOW
----
Paid from the fund to comment in the McCanns favour????
----
Disturbing to hear he is feeling sorry for the McCanns.
Only haters would find behaving like a decent human being 'disturbing'. And only haters would imagine people have to be paid to behave decently.

Jesus H Christ. Robert Murat always has had sympathy for The McCanns. As if he would care what a bunch of Pitch Forkers think.

Exactly, Sabot. Time they all grasped that NO-ONE cares what they think.

That's why normal society are repulsed by them.
