Missing 5-year-old 'got into light-coloured van'
- last updated Mon 1 Oct 2012
There are reports tonight that a five-year-old girl called April Jones has gone missing in Machynlleth in mid Wales this evening.
Local reports suggest police are stopping motorists in the area in a bid to find the child who went missing at about half past seven this evening.
April was last seen playing her bike with friends near garages at her home in Machynlleth. Her friends say they saw her get into a light coloured van which then drove off. Police are growing increasingly concerned for her welfare. Anyone with information should call 101.
Local businessman Shem ap Geraint is one of the many people who've left their homes to join the search.
He told ITV Wales News:
Pretty much the whole town is out looking. Other local towns are joining in as well.
We are searching local woods. The local leisure centre is acting as a base.
Police are checking all vehicles leaving the town.

Re: Five-year-old April Jones Abducted In Wales
Sadly, there has been no good news overnight.
Missing April Jones: Search Intensifies
Two helicopters are being deployed in the search for a missing youngster who was last seen getting into a van.
A local search team is calling for more volunteers in the hunt for a five-year-old girl believed to have been abducted.
April Jones was playing with friends near her home in the Mid Wales town of Machynlleth at around 7pm on Monday when she went missing.
She was last spotted by another child getting into a van wearing a purple knee-length coat with grey fur around the hood, a white polo top and black trousers, said police.
Two helicopters are being deployed to scour the area. Hundreds of residents from the market town have joined police in the hunt and are coordinating their efforts at the Machynlleth Leisure Centre.
Speaking from the leisure centre, Inspector Lyn Rhys told people he would divide them into search teams to avoid an overlap of work.
A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: "Her abduction took place around 7pm in the Bryn Y Gog estate in Machynlleth. It was witnessed by another young child when April was seen getting into a grey or light-coloured van, or van-sized vehicle.
"While the details of what happened are vague at the current time, it appears the suspect left the scene and drove off with April."
Volunteer Anwen Morris appealed for more people to come forward and help.
She told Sky News: "We need bodies down here. We need people in cars, we need people on foot to search the town. We need people up on the mountain. We need anybody that is in the area that can help."
Police are expected to reveal further details during a press conference later on Tuesday.
Detective Superintendent Reg Bevan of Dyfed-Powys Police told Sky News that because the initial account of April's abduction came from children, police were involved in a "delicate and lengthy process" to get the best information.
He said: "Hopefully, later this morning I'll have some more details around the vehicle, specific details, and we are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry around that vehicle, where it may or may not be at this moment in time."
The town, which sits on the southern outskirts of Snowdonia National Park, only has a population of 2,000. Locals had searched an area with a 30-mile radius overnight using quad bikes and off-road vehicles.
Local restaurant owner Razul Islam told Sky News: "There are hundreds of people out looking for her."
"It is such a small town and nearly everyone is out looking for her - I'm shocked that it has happened in a town like this."
Local petrol station owner Nerys Zjalic said she reopened her garage to help with the search.
"My friend called to ask if we would open so people can get petrol to help in the search. Locals are out in full force searching for her."
Ms Zjalic, who knows the missing girl's family, said people had been coming from far and wide to help with the search.
"It's unbelievable - you just don't think that something like that would happen in a small town like Machynlleth.
"Nothing will be the same again - this is a small little market town and you think children are quite safe, but this shows us it's not the case."
Chris Dudley, who works at the Skinners Arms pub on Penrallt Street, said all the locals were out looking for her on Monday night, including in "the cemeteries, the golf field, playing field, everywhere you can think of."
Police have asked anyone with information to call them on 0300 200 0333.

A police press conference is due in an hour.
And I feel sick.

Re: Five-year-old April Jones Abducted In Wales
Decent people everywhere are praying for a happy ending, and all the local people who can help with search parties, etc., are doing so.
Meanwhile, the vultures who inhabit the hater sites are making remarks like:
The past 5 years must have brought out the cynic inside: a 5-year-old girl playing outside at 19:30 in October?
And that is one of the less-foul.
Don't you just know that, if a child vanished near them, they wouldn't be doing anything to help?
No, they would be glued to their keyboards, posting hate, abuse and 'speculation' about the child's family.
It's time something was done about these things, IMO. No-one but a sicko freak could think there is anything at all odd about children playing outside on an autumn evening. Especially in a Welsh village in the middle of nowhere.
Or maybe none of them ever go outside in fresh air because that would mean wasting time that could be spent smearing and 'speculating' about total strangers?

Re: Five-year-old April Jones Abducted In Wales
A little more news:
Missing April Jones Got Into Van 'Willingly'
A missing five-year-old girl got into the driver's side of a van apparently without any struggle, say police.
A missing five-year-old girl who was last seen getting into a van climbed into the vehicle without a struggle, said police.
April Jones was playing with friends near her home in the Bryn Y Gog estate in Machynlleth, mid Wales at around 7pm on Monday when she went missing.
She was last spotted by another child getting into a grey or light-coloured van wearing a purple knee-length coat with grey fur around the hood, a white polo top and black trousers, said police.
During a press conference, Detective Superintendent Reg Bevan of Dyfed-Powys Police said April got into the driver's side of the van which may have been a Land Rover or Ford Connect-type vehicle. The vehicle could have been a left-hand drive.
"The indications are that she got into the vehicle willingly...It's very difficult to give an exact account of what happened. There's nothing to suggest at this stage that there was a struggle when she got into the car," he said.
He said they had a "very early" initial description of the suspect, but was not comfortable to release it at this stage.
Mr Bevan said it was "every family's worst nightmare to suffer a child go missing in this way."
He also emphasised the difficulties of getting accurate information from the young children who were playing with April when she disappeared.
"That is delicate and time-consuming. We are trying to extract exactly what they have seen and we are very anxious to provide the most accurate information we can without misleading anyone in any way," he said.
A massive search has been under way since April went missing. Two helicopters have been deployed to scour the area as part of police operations. Hundreds of residents from the market town have also joined in and are coordinating their efforts at the Machynlleth Leisure Centre.
They were divided into groups of ten by the police and sent out into the hillside to look for the child. The town, which sits on the southern outskirts of Snowdonia National Park, only has a population of 2,000.

Re: Five-year-old April Jones Abducted In Wales
My friends, I received this through google alert:
it´s from Brazil:
http://g1.globo.com/mundo/noticia/2012/10/busca-por-menina-de-5-anos-levada-por-van-mobiliza-centenas-na-gra-bretanha.html
Searching for girl of 5 years 'taken by van' mobilizes Britain
Episode gain national prominence in a country still marked by disappearances of children, such as Madeleine McCann in 2007.
British police are investigating the disappearance of a little girl of five years old who may have been abducted by an adult.
April Jones was playing with his friends bike in front of his house in the small town of Machynlleth in central Wales. The town's population is 2000 people.
Around 19h Monday, she was seen getting into a gray van or light colored. All witnesses are children.
The case is gaining great repercussion in the British press and is the headline of several major newspapers in the country, similar to what happened in 2007 after the disappearance of little Madeleine McCann during his family vacation in Portugal.
Mobilization
The girl's disappearance has caused hundreds of local residents to join in a community center late on Monday. About 200 people helped police in the search for streets, farms and forests last night, but were unsuccessful.
The police released a phone to receive information from others who may contribute to discover the whereabouts of April Jones. Also scattered throughout the city were posters with the photo of the young and scraps on social networks.
Police say it will take to obtain reliable information on the children who witnessed the disappearance.
'Interviewing young children who witnessed this process is a delicate and difficult, "says Detective Supt Reg Bevan, the precinct of Dyfed-Powys region where the city is.
Around the city, police checkpoints of vehicles that are inspected by the circular region.
Police said that, as time passes, the situation is becoming increasingly worrying. Services firefighters and police squads using sniffer dogs were also deployed in the search.
A volunteer said residents did a search in a radius of about 50 km around the site, but found no clue. The city's mayor, Gareth Jones, said the community is "shocked" with the disappearance of April Jones.

This is why families should NOT take part in searches:
Volunteers are now helping with a mass police-organised search, with groups for different areas consisting of 20 people and led by an expert.
Reports said those taking part were told not to pick up any piece of child's clothing they discovered, in case it yielded key forensic clues.

Re: Five-year-old April Jones Abducted In Wales
Oh God, I hope so, Maggs.
A bit more on Sky:
http://news.sky.com/story/991959/missing-april-jones-46-year-old-man-arrested
Detective Superintendent Reg Bevan, of Dyfed-Powys Police, said the suspect was arrested in the last hour, and they had been "actively looking for him".
He said the suspect is a local man and drives a vehicle similar to the one in the police appeal. He was walking by the side of the road when he was seized.
"We were keen to trace him," Mr Bevan added.
Trying to think positively, April will still be in the area, so please God, let her be found soon - alive.

Find her, bring her home safe and sound.

Re: Five-year-old April Jones Abducted In Wales
They have found the van under a bridge
... on the outskirts of Machynlleth, near to where police are searching what they believe may be the vehicle used in the abduction of April
5:27pm
Sky's Mike McCarthy says there is a lot of police activity on the A487 road which has been closed by police in both directions. #April
