Canada Shooting: Parliament In Lockdown
16:26, UK, Wednesday 22 October 2014
Canada's parliament is in lockdown after an armed man was seen running towards the building and dozens of shots were fired, according to media and eyewitnesses.
One gunman has been shot dead inside the building after the incident in the capital Ottawa, according to CBC TV.
Police are actively looking for one or more suspects, and earlier said one or more shooters are likely now on the roof of the parliament building, which is surrounded.
It came after a soldier guarding a nearby war memorial was reportedly wounded after shots were fired.
Shots have also now been reported at a hotel in the city.
A construction worker at the parliament told the Reuters news agency he heard a gunshot, and then saw a man dressed in black with a scarf over his face running towards the building with a gun.
Another witness said more than 30 shots were fired inside the building.
One witness, Marc-Andre Viau, said he saw a man run into a caucus meeting at the parliament, chased by police who yelled "take cover."
This was followed by "10, 15, maybe 20 shots," possibly from an automatic weapon, he said.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is safe and has left Parliament Hill.
Michelle Rempel, MP for Calgary Centre North, tweeted: "Mom im okay Im in hiding."
The cordon has been pushed back and media on the scene have been told they are not safe.
Police have warned people in Ottawa to stay away from windows and roofs.
The wounded soldier, who was standing guard at the National War Memorial, has been taken away in an ambulance.
The soldier appeared to be seriously wounded and medics were seen pushing on his chest to revive him.
The shooting comes two days after an Islamic convert ran down two Canadian soldiers near Montreal, killing one of them.
Authorities had raised the security threat level from low to medium after that incident.

It's very confused just now, Lily, but reports are coming in that there is more than one gunman on the loose, and the fear is that a Mumbai-type attack has been planned.

Always good when someone keeps their head in these situations and gets it right.
Others still seem to be on the loose, though.

Re: Shooting at Canadian parliament
At least his murderer received pretty instant karma, Lily, courtesy of one of the guards at Parliament, so we won't have to listen to the creature whining in court. It's all still confused, but there does seem to be still one on the loose.

Re: Shooting at Canadian parliament
There was an incident a couple of days ago, Lily, when a couple of soldiers were hit by a hit-and-run driver - one died. It does look like there have been warnings something was liable to happen since Canada got involved with the latest Middle East war.
As I saw someone pointing out on Sky, if two or three individuals decide to cause mayhem and bloodshed, and stay off the internet, it's very hard to keep tabs on them. The dead killer appears to be a recent Canadian convert to the famed Religion of Peace.

It's strangely satisfying that instant karma was delivered by someone who is most definitely old-school; I do hope the last thing the terrorist saw was someone dressed in Canada's version of the UK's semi-medieval parliamentary rigout.

Re: Shooting at Canadian parliament
It is now looking less likely that there was more than one gunman; reports of incidents at shopping malls, etc., seem to have been caused by general panic and confusion.

So it is all over now, hopefully, bar the sad, sad death of the soldier?

Re: Shooting at Canadian parliament
For now at least, fingers crossed, Lily. The big worry is that there are a lot more of what is being called 'lone wolves' out there; it seems the killer was on police radar, and it had been -wrongly - thought that he had been turned away from radical Islam. He first came to notice by, naturally, ranting on FB.
Pity FB and twitter couldn't be UN-invented; they've proved less than beneficial to the human race.

Re: Shooting at Canadian parliament
IMO, they're snares for the stupid and gullible, Lily. The none-too-bright, the embittered, the ones with 'issues' that resent authority, etc., are all too easily sucked in, because they imagine that those feeding their egos and reinforcing their own skewed world-view are on their side. In reality, they're just being recruited as cannon fodder.
I know one argument runs that if they're ranting on twitter or FB, they're harmlessly letting off steam, but time and again it goes beyond ranting and someone with a chip on their shoulder, that may well have grown out of it otherwise, ends up committing an atrocity.
Or runs off to Syria to marry some homicidal thug she's fallen in 'love' with on the internet.
And the owners of social sites don't give a XXXX about the damage they do as long as the $$$$$ keep rolling in.

There's something rather Bond-ish about Mr Vickers. I am personally glad he killed the scumbag, and we won't have to put up with him whining about his rights in a courtroom, and causing more distress to his victim's family.
Innocent victim: Natan Cirillo, 24, was the soldier shot dead in Wednesday's terror attack on the Canadian Parliament complex

Re: Shooting at Canadian parliament
His gun wasn't even loaded, Lily, because it was a ceremonial duty. Killing him was an act of utter cowardice.
I wouldn't recommend any jihadists trying that in London; though assorted military carry out ceremonial duties, they've carried loaded weapons for a very long time now.

He may have assumed that no-one would be armed inside the Parliament, either, Lily, as Ottowa isn't exactly a hotspot for trouble.
In which case, he got a very unpleasant surprise in his last seconds on earth.

I've been reading the US media, Lily, Mr Vickers seems to have a bit of a fan club, for plain and simply shooting the b*gger without any carry-on, civilians getting hit in crossfire or similar disasters.
