ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE USA
Two killed, four wounded in Washington state school shooting
By Eric M. Johnson and Victoria Cavaliere
MARYSVILLE Wash. Sat Oct 25, 2014 12:41am EDT
People attend a community vigil at the Grove Church following a shooting at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Marysville, Washington October 24, 2014
(Reuters) - A student shot dead a female classmate and wounded four others when he opened fire in the cafeteria of his Washington state high school on Friday, apparently after a fight with fellow students, officials said.
The shooter, a homecoming prince at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, took his own life as his classmates scrambled to safety in the latest outburst of deadly violence at an American school.
A school district official, who declined to be named, said the shooter was Jaylen Fryberg, a freshman described by classmates and parents as a popular member of both the wrestling and football teams.
"He came up from behind and had a gun in his hand and he fired about eight bullets ... They were his friends so it wasn't just random," student Jordan Luton told CNN, adding that the gunman fired several more shots.
"Then he turned and looked at me and my girlfriend ... and kind of gave us a smirk and turned around and then shot more bullets outside," Luton said.
Police would not confirm the gunman's identity or discuss possible motives for the shooting, but the school district official and several witnesses said he had been previously involved in a fight with another student.
Rebecca Cooley, whose son played sports with Fryberg and was approaching the cafeteria when the shooting erupted, said an altercation broke out on an athletic field following football practice in recent days and that one boy involved was among those shot.
Students who knew Fryberg described him as outgoing and unlike the loner personality that is often associated with school shootings.
"He seemed totally normal," said Gladis Jimenez, 15. "Yes, he had a lot of friends."
There were no indications on Fryberg's social media accounts that he had been planning such a rampage, but on Tuesday he posted his feelings of despondency, apparently over a romantic split, on Twitter.
"It breaks me... It actually does... I know it seems like I'm sweating it off... But I'm not.. And I never will be able to," he wrote.
All of the victims of the shooting were under 18, and three of the wounded were in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the head, said Joanne Roberts, chief of medicine at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett. The fourth wounded victim suffered less serious injuries.
Two of the wounded were boys and two were girls, hospital officials said.
The boys, 15-year-old Andrew Fryberg, shot in the head, and 14-year-old Nate Hatch, shot in the jaw, were both in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, a spokeswoman said.
Local media reported the boys were cousins of the shooter.
MOTIVE UNCLEAR
The violence at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, some 30 miles (48 km) north of Seattle, marked the latest in a series of deadly shooting rampages at American schools that have played a central role in a national debate over gun laws.
In 2012, a 20-year-old gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and killed 20 children and six adults before taking his own life in one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.
At Marysville's The Grove Church, hundreds of parents, students and community members overflowed aisles during a vigil on Friday evening, holding flowers and crying audibly throughout a prayer service.
Outside the vigil, 9th grader Bella Panjeli said she attended a different school but was friends with one of the female victims, calling her "a beautiful girl and so, so sweet."
She also said Fryberg was in an ongoing dispute with his cousin over the victim's affections.
"I heard he asked her out and she rebuffed him and was with his cousin," Panjeli said, adding that she learned of the connection after talking to the victim's family and friends. "It was a fight over a girl."
Police would not say what kind of weapon Fryberg, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, had used. U.S. media reported the weapon was a .40-caliber Beretta handgun.
A spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told reporters the gun had been legally acquired.
Local television stations showed images of students running from buildings and crossing a field with their hands up as officers with rifles ran across the schoolyard. The students were taken to a nearby church by bus.
"I heard these two big noises, and I see kids running and they looked so scared. Then the fire alarm went off and we thought it was a fire," Jimenez, a 10th-grader who was in class during the shooting, told Reuters.
Washington school shooting suspect left unhappy tweets
By Bill Rigby
SEATTLE Fri Oct 24, 2014 8:19pm EDT
(Reuters) - A high school student believed to have shot to death a classmate and wounded four others on Friday at his campus north of Seattle was a popular homecoming prince but appeared on social media as a heart broken and sometimes angry adolescent.
Police offered no motive for why Jaylen Fryberg, a freshman at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Marysville, walked into his school cafeteria and shot his fellow students.
Rebecca Cooley, the mother of a boy at the school, said Frysberg was a well-known football player who recently was on the homecoming court at the school.
His Twitter feed, however, hints at a disappointment of some sort over the past week.
"It won't last.... It'll never last....," read Fryberg's last tweet, from Thursday.
In the three days leading up to that, he sent a series of tweets suggesting he was going through a painful breakup.
"I should have listened.... You were right... The whole time you were right...," said one tweet.
Another said: "It breaks me... It actually does... I know it seems like I'm sweating it off... But I'm not.. And I never will be able to.."
And in a pair of tweets in August, Fryberg appeared to display an angry side.
"Your gonna piss me off .. And then some shits gonna go down and I don't think you'll like it ... Your not gonna like what happens next," he wrote.
Fryberg's Facebook page shows a happier side: photos of him with unidentified girls, posing with a rifle and a slain deer on a hunting trip, and on a boat with Orca whales swimming close behind.
Such images are not out of the ordinary for the coastal area where he lived, in Tulalip Bay, Washington, some seven miles northwest of Marysville.
Photos on Fryberg's Facebook page also shows he was active in sports and played football and basketball, and that he was a member of, and worked for, the Tulalip Tribes, a native American organization which operates two casinos and an outlet mall.

Re: ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE USA
It's all so sad. I want to point out here that these shootings happen in gun free zones. They don't seem to happen elsewhere so that tells us something.....

Re: ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE USA
I honestly do not think these incidents have much to do with your firearms laws, Lily, similar incidents occur here, involving knives. Oh, and cannibal lunatics that happily get tazered to death by the police in mid-eyeball.
The deaths that I would say are because of looser gun laws are the ones where guns are carelessly discharged, or get into the hands of children, but I am not going to lecture anyone on gun law.
These days, if you asked a lot of Brits if they would keep a handgun or shotgun in the house if it was legal to do so, I suspect the majority would say, Yes.

Re: ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE USA
In gun free zones it means that no one can carry a concealed weapon even if they are licensed to do so.
When people can carry, that is when the perpetrator is typically killed by a member of the public and it stops the carnage.
When killers know they are in gun free zones they don't have to worry about being shot themselves.

Re: ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE USA
So would I, Sabot. Read stories like this:
Inside a village under siege: How one of the most peaceful corners of England was turned into a state of anarchy by Libyan cadets accused of rape and violence... that left residents in constant fear

and you can see why so many Brits feel they have been simply left to fend for themselves by the great and the good. I don't blame the police - or the military - for this; fkc-ups like that come from higher up the pecking order.

Re: ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE USA
obama is not doing what was expected to prevent this type of situation, usa needs immediately to aprehend all weapons in houses or more stronger rules in shops who sold this weapons regardless of age or background.

The trouble is, Pedro, that there is an increasing need to protect oneself.

Sabot, I agree with you, but if obama is not doing anything to prevent it, how can the americans expect to have this issue solved, i know it is not easy, but perhaps the americans could avoid to create games (or films) that creates violence or bullying, through a law created to avoid these problems, just an idea about it.

Re: ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE USA
Guys, sorry but you don't understand America. There is the Second Amendment which most people do not want to give up and was given for good reasons.
Americans are, by and large, independent thinking people which also includes their safety. If you got rid of all weapons in the hands of the criminal sector then there would arguably be less need for a weapon. Why on earth would a person look forward to having a crazy person break into your bedroom in the middle of the night pointing a gun at your face? Would you not like to protect yourself and your children?
The police would take too long to reach you and your life and/or others would be over.
It's not simple, rosy looking or anything else. Reality sucks.

As far as I can see, it is getting the guns away from the criminals that is the problem.

Re: ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE USA
I think Sabot and I understand America - and human nature - perfectly, Lily, as we would both keep firearms ourselves.
You simply cannot take firearms off law-abiding people and leave criminals armed, which is what has happened in the UK. Thugs can get guns easily, non-criminals can't. And as for the very idea of Obama sending troops into people's houses to seize weapons - great way to start Civil War 2.
By all means work on people's thinking; do something about violent videos games and especially gangsta rap, which glorifies gun violence. And I would agree people should always be trained in the safe handling of firearms when not in use, that would certainly help prevent accidents.
But I doubt if home invasions would be so common in Portugal if the scum knew it was going to be faced with an irate householder with a gun. And as Lily has pointed out, these massacres are occurring in areas with STRICT gun laws; elsewhere, any attempt at atrocities tends to end the same way as the attack on the Canadian parliament - with the bad guy dead.

Re: ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE USA
Sorry ladies. This is an issue that gets me going and I didn't take the time to read your posts properly. My fault.
Pedro, the American Revolution was a result of what they saw as tyranny and the Founding Fathers worked very hard to ensure that it didn't happen again. Obama himself does not have the power to get rid of the Second Amendment (the right to bear arms) and if he tried, he would be seen as a dictator/tyrant.
There are States where there is a combined amount of weapons that are greater than some countries have and yet criminal use is extremely low.
Unfortunately there are always screwballs out there who take their anger etc out on a crowd and that is tragic. However, more deaths occur in poor areas of the States that are such a common occurrence, as to go unreported.

Re: ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE USA
Crime aside, the stand-off at the Bundy ranch was a perfect illustration of why certain elements in the US government would love to disarm citizens....I have NO doubt it would have been another Waco, if the Feds hadn't been faced with the famed well-armed militia and a couple of live feeds to the rest of the world.
