Sisi warns of response after Islamic State kills 21 Egyptians in Libya

(Reuters) - Islamic State released a video on Sunday that appeared to show the beheadings of 21 Egyptian Christians in Libya and President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warned that his country would respond to the deaths as it saw fit.
Speaking on national television hours after the release of the video, Sisi said Cairo would choose the "necessary means and timing to avenge the criminal killings".
Egypt's state news agency MENA quoted the spokesman for the Coptic Church as confirming that 21 Egyptian Christians believed to be held by Islamic State were dead.
The beheadings could stiffen Sisi's resolve in dealing with security threats from militants thriving in neighboring Libya's chaos who want to topple his U.S.-backed government.
Egypt has denied reports in the past that it had taken part, along with its close ally the United Arab Emirates, in air strikes against militants based in Libya.
The footage showing the deaths of the Egyptians appeared on the Twitter feed of a website that supports Islamic State, which has seized parts of Iraq and Syria and has also beheaded Western hostages.
In the video, militants in black marched the captives, dressed in orange jump suits, to a beach the group said was near Tripoli. They were forced down onto their knees, then beheaded.
A caption on the five-minute video read: "The people of the cross, followers of the hostile Egyptian church." Before the killings, one of the militants stood with a knife in his hand and said: "Safety for you crusaders is something you can only wish for."
Thousands of Egyptians desperate for work have traveled to Libya since an uprising at home in 2011, despite advice from their government not to go to a country sliding into lawlessness.
Sisi, who met with the country's top military commanders to discuss the killings, called for a seven-day mourning period, state television reported.
The Coptic Church said it was confident the government would seek justice. Al Azhar, the center of Islamic learning in Egypt, said no religion would accept such "barbaric" acts.
The families of the kidnapped workers had urged Cairo to help secure their release. In the mostly impoverished southerly Minya Governorate, relatives screamed and fainted upon hearing news of the deaths.
CONCERNS ABOUT LIBYA
Egypt, the most populous Arab state, has not taken part directly in the U.S.-led air strikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria, focusing instead on the increasingly complex insurgency within its own borders.
Militants based in Libya have made contact with Sinai Province, a group operating from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula that has changed its name from Ansar Beyt al-Maqdis and pledged allegiance to Islamic State.
The group has killed hundreds of Egyptian soldiers and police since the army toppled Islamist president Mohamed Mursi in 2013 after mass protests against his rule.
With Libya caught in a chaotic power struggle between two rival factions operating their own governments, Western officials worry that Islamist militants are taking advantage of the turmoil to strengthen their presence.
A number of Islamist militant groups have been active since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 left Libya without a strong central government. A few have declared ties to the radical Islamic State and claimed high-profile attacks over recent weeks in what appears to be an intensifying campaign.
Fears that the crisis in neighboring Libya could spill across the border have prompted Egypt to upgrade its military hardware. French President Francois Hollande has said Egypt will order 24 Rafale fighter jets, a naval frigate and related military equipment in a deal to be signed in Cairo on Monday worth more than 5 billion euros ($5.7 billion).

Others should take note that to an Egyption, your nationality comes first and attacks on Egyptians are treated as attacks on the nation as a whole. The fact that the dead are Copts and not Muslim takes second place. IS will regret what they did. LL

And quite right too, LL. The world should thank the Egyptian military for throwing out the Muslim Brotherhood - can you imagine what north Africa and the Middle East would be like now if they hadn't?
I freely admit that Sisi is somewhat heavy-handed, as in locking up AJ staff on fairly bizarre charges but hopefully that will stop as the situations stabilizes; the alternative doesn't bear thinking about.
There would have been a bloodbath from Libya to Syria if Egypt hadn't stopped the takeover.

Sisi inherited a morass - and he's having to use occasional unorthodox methods to try and clear up the mess Morsi created. As I have Egyptian friends I will be watching even more closely what happens next. LL

That's an interesting piece. Certainly, I saw infuriated Egyptians on everything from RT to Fox yesterday - infuriated by Obama's ambivalent attitude to the problem, and his ongoing attempts to undermine the Egyptian government by inviting men closely linked to the Muslim Brotherhood to the White House recently.

The Obama administration is preparing to equip the so-called “moderate” Syrian rebels with the ability to order U.S. air strikes despite the group’s admitted allegiance to the Islamic State.
Members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) will be provided with radios to call in strikes from American B-1B bombers as well as pickup trucks with mounted machine guns as the president puts the final touches on plans to train as many as 3,000 rebels in Jordan and Turkey by the end of 2015.

Just last September, a commander with the FSA admitted to fighting alongside several terrorist organizations in the region including the Islamic State.
“We are collaborating with the Islamic State and the Nusra Front by attacking the Syrian Army’s gatherings in… Qalamoun,” Bassel Idriss, commander of an FSA-run rebel brigade, said. “Let’s face it: The Nusra Front is the biggest power present right now in Qalamoun and we as FSA would collaborate on any mission they launch as long as it coincides with our values.”
Jamal Maarouf, the leader of the Syrian Revolutionary Front (SRF), also told reporters last April that his fighters regularly worked with Al Qaeda and Al-Nusra as well.
During the same time period it was reported that “several factions within the FSA, including Ahl Al Athar, Ibin al-Qa’im,” decided to hand their weapons over to the Islamic State before pledging their allegiance to the group.
An Islamic State fighter speaking with Al-Jazeera in 2013 revealed that the FSA regularly sold its weapons to them shortly after they would receive shipments from the U.S.
“We are buying weapons from the FSA,” Abu Atheer said. “We bought 200 anti-aircraft missiles and Koncourse anti tank weapons. We have good relations with our brothers in the FSA.”

Right from the start of this latest horror, there have been repeated stories about Israeli hospitals taking in wounded ISIS fighters. Are they? I don't know, as far as I am aware, these stories have never made it into the MSM, so it's impossible to verify. The rumours are persistent, though.
Certainly, when Israel bombed Syria recently, it didn't bomb ISIS. Heavens no, Israel bombed the soldiers fighting ISIS.

I have been wondering why ISIS has not attacked Israel, supposedly the arch enemy of all Islam. If the Israelis have a iota of commen sense they will do to him what was done to Yitzhak Rabin in 1970 (I think that was the year he was assassinated). LL

Bodies with surgical incisions and missing kidneys, or other body parts, have been found in shallow mass graves over the past few weeks, Mohamed Alhakim told the media.
"We have bodies. Come and examine them," he said. "It is clear they are missing certain parts."
A dozen doctors had been "executed" in Mosul for refusing to participate in the practice, he added.
Mr Alhakim accused IS of "crimes of genocide" by targeting certain ethnic groups as he briefed the UN Security Council on the overall situation in Iraq

Rabin was 1995, LL, are you thinking of some other assassinated Middle East Leader? I know, it is odd that Israel isn't worried about ISIS. Indeed, Netenyahu is running round telling European Jews to emigrate to Israel because of ISIS in Europe.
