Looks like he was trying to land it on the golf course? Harrison does have the most interesting accidents - it's not long since he got a broken leg when a bit of the Millennium Falcon fell on him.

 It was an pre-war single seater plane, and it gave out on him.  A pilot would, when things go pear-shaped, aim to land on an open area with no houses etc and a golf course is a good choice.   He did what I would have done, in his place, as that would ensure little or no danger to people.   LL

Certainly looks to me like he tried to land it on a more or less flat green space, LL. And actually, he did a pretty good job - he's a bit battered, and so is the plane, but nothing irreparable.

Yes, a fine piece of flying, especially considering the age of the plane - none of the mod cons you would get in a Cessna or Lear Jet! This was a Ryan PT-22 Recruit, a World War II-era single-engine plane, used as a trainer by the USAF and also used in China and Ecuador. LL
