It seems to me he wishes he had never got involved, apart from the Donations from Widows and Pensioners. Didn't Morais say something about them living on Yoghurt to help him? Although I can't see little children parting with their pocket money on this occasion.

He even turned down Bennett's offer of a welcome in The Scout Hut, despite the grand gesture of paying his fare and expenses. Although perhaps the thought of staying with Bennett was too much for him.

I think she said that they were buying Yoghurt because they couldn't afford anything else after giving their money to Amaral. The point being that this is how much the peasants all love him.
Not that I have found Yoghurt to be all that cheap. But with the obvious vast food intake of Morais then she might be forgiven for thinking that it was a cheap option.
