Re: POLLING DAY AS IT HAPPENS: TELEGRAPH TV LINK
Oh, dear!! When I was a kid there used to be the odd bull rampaging down a narrow lane in Stromness, always a great thrill for us!! LL
This is Brinkles Brae, which shows how narrow the streets are. No cars, just good old foots!

Right, well, most of the streets are like that, which is why there aren't too many cars in the town, bicycles are in great demand! Your pic is of Brinkles Brae at the bottom, mine is much further up the hill. LL

Tory hypocrites beg SNP for help landing lucrative Commons jobs - weeks after demonising them
22:47, 2 JUNE 2015
BY BEN GLAZE
Conservative MPs are crawling to Scots nationalists for support in landing plum £82,000 chairs of select committees
Laughable: SNP MP Angus McNeill finds the Tory hypocrisy hilarious
Tory MPs are being accused of hypocrisy for turning to Scottish nationalists for support in landing plum jobs at the House of Commons.
Their plea for help comes despite weeks of Conservative election scaremongering over the “frightening” prospect of Labour cutting backroom deals with the SNP.
Now they are seeking SNP support themselves to chair select committees with an £82,000-a-year salary.
“It is extraordinary,” laughed Scots nationalist MP Angus McNeill.
“A few weeks ago the SNP were the princes of darkness.
“Now we’re here, we’re suddenly the kings of light who can lift them to the dizzy heights.”
Chairing a select committee is a highly prestigious role that comes with a £15,000-a-year pay rise on top of the standard £67,000 MPs’ salary.
They are chosen by a secret ballot of all MPs at the start of each Parliament.
Competition for the jobs is fierce, and ambitious contenders are currently seeking backing from their pals ahead of a series of votes over the coming weeks.
And shameless Tories have not been shy about approaching the SNP politicians who before the election they demonised as a threat to Britain’s future.
“I received this ridiculous creeping letter from a Tory,” one newly-elected SNP MP told the Mirror.
“It was my first day in Westminster and it came through on headed paper, asking if I would support him.
“I couldn’t believe it. I’ve never met the bloke. I thought we were meant to be these dangerous invading hordes!”
In April, David Cameron said the prospect of Labour doing deals wit the SNP was “very frightening”.
George Osborne said any deals with the SNP would be “dangerous”.
And Boris Johnson described the prospect as “Ajockalypse Now”.

http://news.sky.com/story/1496945/charles-kennedy-death-caused-by-alcoholism
Charles Kennedy's family said he died of a "major haemorrhage" that was "a consequence of his battle with alcoholism".
The relatives of the former Liberal Democrat leader issued a statement following a post-mortem examination.
They said they had been "touched beyond measure by the outpouring of warmth" following the sudden death of the 55-year-old at his home in Fort William on Monday.
His family said a post-mortem examination had found he had he suffered a "major haemorrhage".
"The report makes clear this was a consequence of his battle with alcoholism," the statement said.
"We are grateful to the many friends and also medical experts who sought to help down the years but ultimately this was an illness Charles could not conquer despite all the efforts he and others made."
It added: "The pain we feel has been at least eased somewhat by the reaction of so many people across Scotland, the UK and beyond, and by the affection expressed by politicians across the spectrum.
"It has become all too apparent to us how much Charles meant to so many people and how many lives he touched."
Poor man.

This is not unusual in cases of extreme alcoholism. And possibly a trifle less distressing than kidney or liver failure.
I am so pleased to see such kindness to what was an honourable man.

The Orcadian
Carmichael petition published by OIC
Friday, June 5, 2015, at 4:02pm
Orkney Islands Council and Shetland Islands Council have both published copies of a petition, lodged with the Court of Session last week, which is seeking to overturn the election of Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael during the last UK General Election.
The two councils are legally obligated to publish the document on their websites, giving notice that a copy of the petition has been received by the Returning Officer for the areas, Alistair Buchan.
The petition is part of a crowd funded appeal, called The People Versus Carmichael, which was launched following the MP’s admission regarding a pre-election leaked memo alleging that Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon would prefer UK Conservative leader David Cameron to remain as Prime Minister.
The petition can be found at the OIC website.

Thanks, LL. I just checked the fundraiser:

£55,607GBP
raised by 3,676 people in 12 days
93% funded 19 days left
£60,000 GBP goal
Flexible Funding
Personally, I will be astounded if this is allowed to get as far as court. Too many worms are liable to come squirming out.

Oddly, it has failed to mention its own revolting, racist campaign, or the vile cartoons in the Guardian accusing Scots of incest.
If anyone still doubts that the London Media will do anything to protect the London establishment, I suggest they read this:

http://www.thenational.scot/news/orangefest-petition-organiser-receives-online-death-threats.3795?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter&utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_term=Autofeed#link_time=1433574541
‘Orangefest’ petition organiser receives online death threats
JUNE 6TH, 2015 - 12:30 AM ANDREW LEARMONTH 26 COMMENTS
THE organiser of an online petition criticising today’s “Orangefest” in Glasgow has been forced to delete her Facebook and Twitter accounts after receiving death threats.
Julie Philp, who started the petition on Tuesday, says that her elderly parents and siblings have also been the victims of abuse.
As well as the threats, pictures of Philp’s wedding and pictures of her family have been shared on forums and in Facebook groups.
The 29-year-old, who lives in Glasgow, says that even her employer, a financial services company, has been targeted.
Philp is perturbed by how much information the supporters of the Orange Order’s event have managed to find: “I don’t know how they’ve managed to do it, but they’ve got more and more of my photos even though all my settings are private”.
Yesterday, after sustained abuse on Twitter and Facebook, Philp deleted her social media accounts.
She says the photos don’t contain anything she’s ashamed of. “What I’m more concerned about is the abuse, the death threats. It’s on another level”.
Philp reels off some of the threats: “‘Burn her, she’s a witch, let’s go after her.’ It’s insane”.
Despite the threats, she doesn’t regret starting the petition.
When she first posted it online, she expected 200 or so signatures. Last night the petition was approaching 30,000.
It states: “The people of Glasgow and Scotland are sick of their voices going unheard in relation to sectarian, hate-filled Orange marches. Now we have to put up with Orangefest.
“We demand that GCC [Glasgow City Council] answer to the people of Glasgow as to why this was allowed to go ahead in a city-centre location on a busy Saturday.”
“Let’s be clear, I’m not talking about banning the Orange Order or banning marches” said Philp.
“This whole Orangefest came out of nowhere at the beginning of the week. There was no consultation, there was nothing. All the opposing parties have come out and said it’s absolutely ludicrous.
“But the [Glasgow City Council] Licensing Committee were left no option but to let it go ahead or else they land themselves in court with a big costly court case from the Orange Order.
“Orangefest was just a step too far”
Police Scotland told The National that they were aware of the threats made and were investigating.
The all-day event today has been billed as a “heritage” day, with speakers, bands, and choirs. A march of around 400 walkers will set off from Glasgow’s Holland Street and make its way to George Square.
Representatives of other faiths have been invited to the event as well as a representative from the Irish consulate.
On Thursday The National reported that businesses around George Square said they were already losing customers as a result of the event.
At Thursday’s licensing committee, Police Scotland admitted that the “low-risk” event would, after the interest in the media and online, need to be policed differently.
Nobody at the Orange Order returned The National’s request for a comment.
However, a statement from the Orange Order released yesterday read: “The usual suspects have made a last-minute attempt at discrediting the event, deriding it as ‘provocative’ and ‘divisive’ and calling upon the city council to ban it.
“We have to live with the knee-jerk hostility of those who are diametrically opposed to the
Order’s religious and patriotic principles.
“For everyone else, this event is an open invitation to gain a better understanding of one of Glasgow’s oldest and biggest fraternal and charitable organisations, warts and all.
“Recent government-funded studies on sectarianism advocated greater public engagement in order to tackle myths and misconceptions, break down barriers and improve community relationships.
“Saturday’s event is an honest contribution towards that end.”
Just like the London Establishment media didn't report the Unionist riots in George Square after the referendum, when they also attempted to burn down the Sunday Herald offices.
The Mail, and the rest of them, are doing their beloved Union not one bit of good with these grotesque distortions of reality, censorship and outright lies, quite the opposite.
They are driving people into the Independence camp.

Anti-EU editor pockets European subsidies
24 January 2014 by Lisa Falconer
The editor of the virulently anti-EU ‘Daily Mail’, Paul Dacre, has landed more than a quarter of a million pounds in EU subsidies for his sporting estate in Wester Ross.
Mr Dacre has owned the 14,000-acre Langwell Estate near Ullapool since 2009 and it is heavily marketed to attract shooting and fishing parties. The lodge has recently undergone major renovation.
According to the FarmSubsidy website which tracks EU payments, Langwell received EU grants to the value of 300,408 euros in 2012, 287,000 euros of which was paid under the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development which is supposed to support “diversification of the rural economy”. Another 13,000 euros was received in Direct Farm Payments.
Oh, so he owns a chunk of North Britain in which he and his fellow-Tories kill animals for fun? And scrounges money off the EU to do so?
Doncha just hate these useless eaters that scrounge off the taxpayer?

Interesting comment on yesterday's disgusting piece in the Mail:
http://wingsoverscotland.com/the-scum-of-the-earth/#comments
Iain Gray's Subway Lament says:
6 June, 2015 at 5:03 pm
I’ll leave Wings readers to work out who it was behind some distinctly furtive looking characters suddenly appearing in Kennedy’s local pubs when they got wind of his death. And why they were handing out drinks and cash while sniffing around for anything salacious on Kennedy.
Or indeed after most of the locals told them to feck off why that kind of scum would then head straight for Kennedy’s bins to ascertain whether anyone was staying with him, snoop through discarded receipts/bills/letters.
To top it all off some of Clegg’s most repulsive spinners at lib dem HQ have been caught feeding the Mail bits and pieces about Kennedy.
Those kind of kind of low-life spinners clearly have no principles AT ALL.
So whether it’s just for cash, to smear the SNP or whether it’s just to advance Clegg’s right-wing agenda by trying to discredit the left-wing Kennedy, take your pick.
