Lord Sewel criticises Alex Salmond in prostitute video
Disgraced peer Lord Sewel is seen criticising fellow politicians including former First Minister Alex Salmond in new footage released allegedly showing him drinking after having taken drugs with prostitutes.
The SNP MP, who is now the party’s foreign affairs spokesman, is the target of abuse by the peer during a conversation captured on camera at Lord Sewel’s flat in Dolphin Square, Pimlico, a couple of miles from parliament.
Alex Salmond as a “silly, pompous prat”, in footage obtained by The Sun, as Sewel recalls being on a flight in which he describes the former SNP leader walking up and down the flight aisle “holding court” and speaking to passengers.
David Cameron is also branded “the most facile, superficial prime minister there’s ever been”.
A bottle of what appears to be vodka sits on the table while Lord Sewel drinks from a glass at various points during his conversation with the women.
He labels Mayor of London Boris Johnson “a joke” and a “public school upper class twit”.
Asked by one of the women, whose voice is disguised, about former Labour prime minister Tony Blair’s decision to go to war in Iraq, Lord Sewel says the ex-party leader did so “because he fell in love with George Bush”.
The newspaper also reports that Lord Sewel said the Labour leadership race is “in a f***ing mess”.
He called Jeremy Corbyn “a romantic idiot”, the paper said, and claimed Andy Burnham has been “terribly contradictory” and “goes whichever way the wind is blowing”.
His judgement of Yvette Cooper was that she is “okay but not strong”, while he appeared to forget Liz Kendall’s name, describing her as “a Blair supporter who is just too naive”.
Too funny.

Re: Sex, drugs and the House of Lords
The House of Lords is a disgrace - 800 of them, all unelected, troughing to the tune of at least £300 a DAY. And the other perks:
Yesterday morning Sewel resigned as chairman of the privileges and conduct committee and as deputy speaker. The roles gave him a salary of £84,500 and an annual housing allowance of £36,000.
However, he has not resigned from the House of Lords.

It was LESS corrupt when the peers were all hereditary, or had genuinely contributed to public life for the better. At least the old buffers from the shires occasionally showed signs of independent thought, and didn't rip off more from the public purse than an army of dole fraudsters could even dream of.
The Lords disgusts me, frankly.

Re: Sex, drugs and the House of Lords
His Life peerage is a gift from the Queen and she is the only person who can revoke the summons that come with a life peerage. It would be something that the Forfeiture Committee recommends to the Queen and the Queen acts on that. It cannot be passed on once the recipient has died. When one has a title it carries certain obligations, one of which is to behave properly and not disgrace it. LL

Re: Sex, drugs and the House of Lords
I had to check, Lily - yes, it was Blair that started handing out peerages to political cronies:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Lords
1997–2010[edit]
The Labour Party included in its 1997 general election Manifesto a commitment to remove the hereditary peerage from the House of Lords.[22] Their subsequent election victory in 1997 under Tony Blair finally heralded the demise of the traditional House of Lords. The Labour Government introduced legislation to expel all hereditary peers from the Upper House as a first step in Lords reform. As a part of a compromise, however, it agreed to permit 92 hereditary peers to remain until the reforms were complete. Thus all but 92 hereditary peers were expelled under the House of Lords Act 1999 (see below for its provisions), making the House of Lords predominantly an appointed house.
Since 1999 however, no further reform has taken place. The Wakeham Commission proposed introducing a 20% elected element to the Lords, but this plan was widely criticised.[23] A Joint Committee was established in 2001 to resolve the issue, but it reached no conclusion and instead gave Parliament seven options to choose from (fully appointed, 20% elected, 40% elected, 50% elected, 60% elected, 80%, and fully elected). In a confusing series of votes in February 2003, all of these options were defeated although the 80% elected option fell by just three votes in the Commons. Socialist MPs favouring outright abolition voted against all the options.[citation needed]
It's widely rumoured to be just a matter of time till Gordon Brown, Darling, and a few other SLabs are put on the gravy train.

Re: Sex, drugs and the House of Lords
Life peerages are given by the Queen on the advice of the current PM. Most outgoing PMs will be given a knight/damehood, though Margaret Thatcher was given a Baronetcy. They are basically a reward for services rendered, not sure how many Blair suggested to HM - just looked it up, 213 by Blair during his premiership. LLlily wrote:Was it Blair or another Prime Minister that recommended these people for peerages?
ETA From Wikipedia:
"Tony's Cronies" is a term in British politics and media given to people who were viewed as being given positions of power because of their personal friendships with Prime Minister Tony Blair, during his premiership between 1997 and 2007. These included those granted life peerages and public positions based on their friendship with Blair rather than their individual merits. The phrase was created by the Conservative Party after the 1997 United Kingdom general election and was continually used in the media throughout Blair's premiership.

i can't comment on that. Life peerages began in 1958, and are as the name says, for the life of the person given one and unlike heredity peerages end with death of the holder. LLlily wrote:Thank you. I thought so. This smacks of something or another that is not good........

It's the corruption, the old pals' club - it's an affront to democracy, frankly. Any party hack can get one and be on the gravy train for life. They're little better than our very own nomenklatura.

Re: Sex, drugs and the House of Lords
Politics has always had a reputation for corruption - no country, however it may pride itself on its 'purity' is actually free of perks for the boys/girls. Some, of course, are worse than others. As you know, I avoid politics like the plague. LL

Re: Sex, drugs and the House of Lords
Silly old fool's resigned:
http://news.sky.com/story/1526323/drug-shame-peer-steps-down-from-house-of-lords
Lord Sewel has stepped down from the House of Lords after being filmed allegedly taking drugs with two prostitutes but will get to retain his title.
The 69-year-old peer apologised for the "pain and embarrassment" he caused after being exposed by the Sun on Sunday for apparently snorting cocaine off a prostitute's breasts with a £5 note at his flat near the Palace of Westminster.
Footage showed Lord Sewel, who in his role as chairman of the Privileges and Standards Committee is responsible for setting behaviour standards for peers, in an orange bra and leather jacket smoking and drinking with the women.
and
Mr Cameron has created peers at a faster rate than any other Prime Minister since life peerages began in 1958.
There are currently 783 members in the upper chamber, making it the largest legislative body outside China - and the Prime Minister is expected to make dozens more appointments, swelling numbers to 830.
There are 650 MPs in the House of Commons.
