Nazi gold train could contain ornate £250m 'Amber Room' given to Tsar Peter the Great by the King of Prussia - and missing since it was looted during WWII
Author Tom Bower hopes the Amber Room is concealed within the train
The room, made of amber, gold and precious jewels, was stolen in 1941
The Germans took it to one of their castles, in what was then East Prussia
Disappeared when Red Army marched on city, and hasn't be heard of again

The Nazi gold train could contain an ornate room crafted out of amber, gold and precious jewels which has been missing since it was looted during World War Two, it has been claimed.
Journalist Tom Bower, who wrote Nazi Gold: the Full Story of the Fifty-Year Swiss-Nazi Conspiracy to Steal, has said he believes there is a high likelihood the hidden locomotive is filled with art and precious jewels, rather than bars of gold.
But what he really hopes to find in the train discovered abandoned in a tunnel underneath a Polish mountain is the Amber Room, stolen from the Catherine Palace, near St Petersburg, in about 1941.

I must admit to being amused by some of the comments, Lily.

Oh, the Yanks will steal it!

Oh, how wonderful for Poland to have such a treasure!
...etc.

Er, no, whenever possible Nazi loot is reunited with its original owners. Which would be Russia.

Nazi 'gold train': Treasure could be claimed by Russia as compensation for Second World War

reasure contained in a long-lost Nazi ghost train could be claimed by Russia. A Russian lawyer has said that the Kremlin could lay claim to the valuables as compensation for the country’s losses in the Second World War.

The so-called ‘Nazi gold train’ has been reportedly found in Poland. Rumours had swirled around the town of Walbrzych for years that a train filled with gold had been abandoned during the Nazi era and was lying undiscovered nearby.

An apparent death-bed confession finally lead to its supposed location being pin-pointed. Government officials say that they are now “more than 99 per cent certain the train exists.”

The train is thought to contain the ‘Amber room’ - an ornate chamber made of amber pearls thought to be worth £250m. It was stolen by German troops from a palace near St Petersburg during the war.

Speaking to Sputnik, lawyer Mikhail Joffe said: “Representatives of Russia should undoubtedly be involved in determining the value of the items discovered if the train is located.

“In this case, Poland is obliged to engage international experts to clarify what is in the cargo. If the property has been taken away from territory, including the USSR, then the cargo, in accordance with international law, must be passed to the Russian side.”

However, Polish officials disagree. Vice Minister for Conservation, Piotr Zuchowski, told local media: “The analysis we have conducted with our lawyers quite clearly states that if the train is found it will be owned by the State Treasury.”

'Compensation'? If anything in that train was looted by the Nazis from Russia, then it still belongs to Russia. Just like stolen Jewish artwork belongs to its original owners, and is returned to them - or rather, any living relatives.

If artefacts on the train were stolen from Poles, it's a different matter, but Poland has no claim on anything else. Even treasure from sunken galleons has been returned to Spain - it's not as simple as 'finders, keepers'.

Yes, of course it does, Lily, I don't know why they are deluding themselves like this. Generic items like rings, etc., are hard to trace back - but the Amber Room most certainly isn't. Likewise artwork, statues, etc.

Is the Amber Room on Nazi treasure train? Empty Suspected location of mystery Nazi gold train set ablaze

Suspected location of mystery Nazi gold train set ablaze but authorities insist it wasn't arson

The embankment considered to be favourite for where the train is located underneath was burnt along with 219 square yards of forest and bush

By Matthew Day, Warsaw and Gregory Walton5:56PM BST 31 Aug 2015

The mystery surrounding a legendary Nazi gold train buried in Poland took a new twist after the suspected location of the armoured train and its cargo went up in flames.
The embankment by the Wroclaw-Walbrzych main line considered to be the favourite for the train’s location in the town of Walbrzych, southern Poland, was burnt along with 219 square yards of forest and bush on it.
The blaze was only brought under control after five fire appliances attended following a phone call of fire at 8pm on Sunday night,
Unidentified treasure hunters claim to have found the train that allegedly disappeared in the dying days of the Second World War along with its loot among the hills around Walbrzych.
Although the fire brigade said they were almost certain it was not arson, the blaze has added to the mystery of a story that has gripped both Polish and international attention since news broke of the train’s apparent discovery two weeks ago.
It also emerged that treasure hunters on the trail of the legend claim to have been intimidated by mysterious armed men who warned them to stop looking.
Tadeusz Slowikowski, a local historian who has dedicated himself to finding the train, told the MailOnline that in 2003 three armed men told him to stop searching, and that his dog had been poisoned. He also claimed his phone was still monitored.
“A lot of dangerous people are interested in finding this train, this could have been a warning from one of them,” another hunter told the website. “This man who called me knows that I know something.”
Contrasting opinions over the amount and credibility of evidence supporting the existence of the train have also become public.
Tomasz Smolarz, the regional governor, said at a press conference on Monday, that on the "evidence presented to the mayor of Walbrzych we cannot confirm the discovery".
He added that he had only seen a few pages of “illegible maps that were of little value”.
Roman Szelemej, mayor of Walbrzych, said he remained sceptical over claims of the train’s discovery.
Their opinions contrast with those of Piotr Zuchowski, Poland’s vice culture minister, who said on Friday he was “99 per-cent certain” the train existed after seeing images taken by the claimants using ground penetrating radar (GPR).
For reasons that remain unclear it appears the GPR pictures have not been shared among the Polish authorities.
