France votes to move Right
It is looking like Ms Le Pen's party has made big gains in the French local elections:

#France tonight. Dark blue = FN, light blue = "Republicans" (traditional right), rose = Socialists.
Another triumph for Ma Merkel.

Re: France votes to move Right
This is only the First Round. Some Socialist Contenders have withdrawn and are backing the middle. So, far from a victory for Le Penn at the moment.
Not that I care all that much. It won't affect me. I have been here for too long, and paid too many French Taxes. But I would like to see Sarkozy back. At all National Parades he did at least look as though he was really interested, while Hollande looks bored out of his brain.

Re: France votes to move Right

Ms Le Pen and her niece have a good lead in the regions they are standing in - Nord-Pas de Calais-Picardie and Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur - but their victories are far from assured.
The result could rest on who socialist voters choose, after their party pulled out of the race in those regions and urged supporters to back Nicolas Sarkozy’s conservatives in an effort to block the National Front.
This could get nasty. Depending on the votes cast, I don't see it going down well if socialists deliberately stymie the democratic will of the public.

It's quite normal for the losing party in the first round to pledge support for a party of their choice. The Socialists are to the Left and Le Pen is to The Right, so it follows that The Socialists would support and probably vote for The Middle to hopefully keep out the opposite extreme.
It has never caused a problem in the past.
In my opinion Marine Le Penn is getting a gut reaction to recent events, but they aren't seriously supported, other than in the odd enclave. Too much past bad press. And Le Penn himself hasn't helped. Although Marine Le Penn is a seasoned politician and possibly deserves to do better than I think she will.

Re: France votes to move Right
Looks like the shenanigans have worked:
http://news.sky.com/story/1605202/national-front-collapses-in-regions-exit-poll
The National Front failed to build on first round leads in the French regional elections and did not win any councils, according to exit polls.
Marine Le Pen's far-right group had gained more votes nationally than any other party in last week's first round, boosted by the migration crisis and the Paris terror attacks.
But three polling agencies have projected that the opposition conservatives and governing Socialists won control of France's 13 regions.
Both Ms Le Pen and niece Marion Marechal-Le Pen lost out in their respective regions after the Socialists withdrew and urged supporters to back Nicolas Sarkozy's conservatives.
Even so, the National Front looks to have significantly increased its share of the vote.
If their vote has increased, then they have NOT 'collapsed'; they have been kept out of office by trickery. I can't see this making matters any better.

One poll suggested Ms Le Pen secured 42.5% in the second round against the centre-right's 57.5%.
Xavier Bertrand, who is leading in Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie, said the French had given "a lesson of rallying together, courage. Here we stopped the progression of the Front National."
The Socialists had withdrawn from the second round in the region to avoid splitting the vote against the FN.
Couurage? Abject cowardice, more like, making dodgy political alliances to subvert democracy.

Re: France votes to move Right
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/dec/13/front-national-fails-to-win-control-of-target-regions-amid-tactical-voting
Exit polls on Sunday night showed that with less than 18 months to go until the next French presidential election, the nationalist, anti-immigration, anti-European FN still gained hundreds of regional councillors across France — tripling its presence on regional councils and extending its nationwide reach, cementing its grassroots powerbase and boosting its quest for power nationwide.
Despite the FN failing to grab its first region, Marine Le Pen will still use her party’s first round breakthrough performance as a springboard for her bid for the 2017 presidential election.
Addressing her supporters, Le Pen presented her party as the victim of “calumny and defamation” by the government who she said had “intimidated and infantilised” voters by teaming up with its rivals on the right to keep the FN out of power.
She said that the tactical voting by leftwingers who chose Nicolas Sarkozy’s rightwing Les Républicains party in order to put up a “barricade” against the FN had already played into her claim that she and her voters were the victims of an elitist system that persecuted them. She had vowed during the campaign that her voters would take their revenge by turning out in even greater numbers during the presidential campaign.

Re: France votes to move Right
With respect, LL, you're missing the point. FN didn't 'not win a seat' because the French public turned against them, far from it.
They didn't win the regions because the Socialists told their leftist supporters to vote for the centre-Right party to keep FN out. FN has, in fact, trebled their council seats, etc.
Sky:
Both Ms Le Pen and niece Marion Marechal-Le Pen have lost in their respective regions after the Socialists withdrew and urged supporters to back the conservatives.
Even so, the National Front is projected to have gained many individual seats.
"Nothing will stop us," Ms Le Pen told cheering supporters in northern France.
"By tripling our number of councillors, we will be the main opposition force in most of the regions of France."
She also celebrated the "total eradication" of the left, who dropped from 12 to five regions.
That is NOT democracy; even worse, it feeds perfectly into the NF narrative that European elites are conspiring against the indigenous working classes.
Because that is exactly what has just happened in France.
Now, I don't personally care who runs things in France, but I do know that when supposed democracies manipulate votes like this, it ALWAYS comes back and bites them on the bum further down the road.
The French establishment thinks it has bought itself time; in reality, its just a matter of time till the next terrorist attack, and let's see what French people think of their scheming elites then.

Re: France votes to move Right
My friends, this was taken from Correio da Manhã newspaper:
http://www.cmjornal.xl.pt/mundo/detalhe/20151214_0442_conservadores_derrotam_le_pen.html
Marine Le Pen loses in France
Extreme-right, the National Front lost across the country.
France said 'no' to Extreme-right National Front (FN) and supported the mobilization of the republican front in the 2nd round of regional elections in France.
After the day's political earthquake 6, when the anti-immigration discourse and antieuropeístic, the FN won six of the 13 French regions, voters turned the vote and on Sunday gave victory in at least seven regions to the center-right (39.7% of votes), led by Republicans party of former President Nicolas Sarkozy, and five on the union leftists (31%), led by the Socialist Party (PS), the current PR François Hollande.
No triumphalism, Sarkozy recalled "the notice sent to all politicians in the first round." Not least because the outcome is due in part to the "sacrifice" of the Socialists, who withdrew candidates in two of the regions where previously won the FN and called the tactical vote to ward off the far right.
In a volte-face announced in the polls, the FN won 28.4% of the vote, but did not win any region. And neither Le Pen nor niece, Marion Maréchal-Le Pen managed to be elected in the regions where competing.
In the North Pas-de-Calais Picardie, the withdrawal of the PS led Xavier Bertrand (Republicans) to get 57.5% of the vote against 42.5% of Marine Le Pen.
In the Southeast, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Christian Estrosi (Republicans) benefited from the left exit and had 54.5% against 45.5% of the young Marion.
Unable to hide the disappointment, the leader of the FN, Marine Le Pen, reported that they had "been victims of manipulation and slander." But, she said, "we will be the main opposition party in most regions."

Some of them are not very nice people despite the efforts of Marine Le Penn to water things down. And if they can't get elected around Calais then they won't get elected anywhere.
We have been having this hype for years now, and it always comes to nothing. Jean Marie Le Pen sticks his oar in and reminds everyone of what they are.

Re: France votes to move Right
That isn't my point though, LL. What happened in France yesterday was a mockery of democracy and is likely to strengthen FN in the long run, not weaken it. One of the main planks of their party is that French political elites are conspiring against ordinary working people - and lo! the French political elites did that very thing to keep FN out of office.
Imagine if, say, the Lib Dems looked likely to take office in the UK, and the Labour party ordered its supporters to vote Tory to keep the Lib Dems out...
Sure, the Lib Dems are kept out of high office through chicanery - but meanwhile, they make huge gains at council level, and the issue they've been campaigning on is getting worse, not better.
The established French parties should have been able to deal with FN by honest methods; they couldn't. Instead, they are sitting on a ticking time bomb. Not least because the actual number of votes cast for FN appears to have gone UP, not down.

Re: France votes to move Right
I honestly don't see what you are saying, Bonny. Tactical Voting isn't a crime, and even happens in UK to some degree. But this has been the norm in France for as long as I have been here.
The Socialists having withdraw their candidates because they couldn't win were always likely to vote for the middle line without being told to. This is what the Two Rounds System is all about. It's even used in some circumstances in UK.
If Marine Le Pen was looking like a dead loss she would have withdrawn and advised her supports to vote for Sarkozy's Party to keep out The Left.

Re: France votes to move Right
I confess, I am staggered that people cannot see this, Sabot. This is NOT democracy, and plays into the FN narrative about them being the victims. Their vote didn't collapse, it increased.
Many Americans now refer to the Republicans and Democrats as the 'Uniparty', as they are more interested in scratching each others' backs than doing anything to benefit the electorate - France looks to be going down the same corrupt route.
French politicians should be asking themselves why they couldn't defeat FN without chicanery, instead of clapping themselves on the back.

'Islamic invasion'-touting, Koran-Mein Kampf-equating MP Wilders scores Dutch Politician of Year tag
Right-wing populist Geert Wilders has been named Dutch Politician of the Year for the third time. The anti-immigration and anti-Islam MP likens the Koran to Hitler's ‘Mein Kampf’ and wants to close national borders to stop an “Islamic invasion.”
Never before has a politician won the award on three occasions. The Dutch Politician of the Year award is nominated annually by EenVandaag, a news program on public television, following a poll.
The Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid, PVV) leader, who had previously scooped the coveted title in 2010 and 2013, garnered a quarter of the more-than-37,000 votes. Shortly before the announcement of the result, Wilders shouted that all refugees must leave the country, Dutch website AD.nl reported. The call was made during a brief debate on the refugee crisis.
The PVV is currently the leading party in the Dutch polls, more popular than the two governing coalition parties. The next challenge for Wilders is to become the next prime minister in the 2017 elections. ....etc.
It will be interesting to see what shenanigans the Dutch establishment get up to to protect their beloved European project.

Lyon magistrates acquit Marine Le Pen of inciting hatred
The leader of France’s far-right National Front (FN) was acquitted Tuesday of charges of inciting hatred after comparing Muslim street prayers to the Nazi occupation, AFP said. Marine Le Pen, 47, had been accused of “inciting discrimination, violence or hatred toward a group of people based on their religious beliefs” over the comments she made in December 2010. Magistrates in the southeast city of Lyon absolved her of any crime. In regional elections on Sunday, the anti-immigration party did not manage to win any regions. However, its strong showing in a first round of voting panicked mainstream parties.
