Alan Rickman: British Actor Dies Aged 69

British actor Alan Rickman, famous for roles in Harry Potter and Love Actually, has died at the age of 69, his family has said.

The star won a BAFTA, Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild award in a career which began in the late 1970s.

However, he shot to stardom in 1988 when he played Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis's adversary, in Die Hard.

Rickman gained legions of new fans for his role as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films.

A family statement said: "The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends."

Rickman's other notable roles include Jamie in Truly, Madly, Deeply and Colonel Brandon in the 1995 version of Sense And Sensibility.

He took home a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his performance as Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny in HBO's 1996 drama.

Just seen it on TV - he was one of my most fav actors, a brilliant person in all respects.  I am gutted - these come in threes, who will be next?    RIP Alan, a loss to the theatre and film.   Lamplighter

Though Lemmy was just before New Year, of course.

If he died before 1 Jan 2016 then I don't think that includes him - I don't even know who he was, by the way.   I find it slight uncanny that Bowie died two days after his birthday and Ricknan died just over a month before his, 21 February. which is the day after mine, both of cancer.   Bowie was cremated privately, no state funeral which will upset his fans!    LL

If Bowie's funeral had been any other way, it would have turned into a circus, I suspect, LL, which was clearly the last thing he and his family wanted.

There were demands online for him to have a state funeral! I'm glad it happened quietly, people should remember that, though they loved and admired him, he first and last belonged to his family. LL

His fans have a new album so they should remember that he did do something for them.

RIP Alan.

Oh, yes, the Sheriff - did you know Kevin Costner edited out some of Alan 's performance because people were saying, while the rushes were being shown to him and the crew, that Alan was the true star of Robin Hood? LL

 Alan, 70 years today.   I know you have gone away forever, but I send you birthday wishes, complete with     Lamplighter

That’s the humility and commitment he brought to being part of an ensemble in telling a story we really wanted to tell, based on Guy Hibberd’s fantastic script. He was just a joy to work with.

What a nice way to be remembered - I am sure it is a comfort to Alan's family.
