Schönbrunn Panda-Dad Long Hui dead after tumour op.
Rest in peace, Big Guy, you will never be forgotten, LLFather of five pandas, Long Hui, has died during emergency surgery on an abdominal tumour at Vienna's Schönbrunn Zoo.
The tumour was only recently diagnosed. Since his diagnosis in mid-November, the Chinese bear had spent most of his time inside, while still remaining visible to zoo visitors.
Long Hui was described as having a very relaxed character and usually a happy disposition. His caretakers did not dare to leave him out of their sight during this difficult and uncertain time for him.
The 16-year old panda recently became the father of twin panda babies at the famous zoo, named Fu Feng and Fu Ban by popular vote. Having arrived at Schönbrunn in March of 2003, Long Hui has five panda offspring in total with his panda partner, Yang Yang.
According to a report in the Die Presse newspaper, Long Hui had been under intensive treatment. An ultrasound showed the ten centimetre tumour in his abdomen on Tuesday.
As his conditioned worsened, and in consultation with panda specialists from China, it was decided to carry out emergency surgery on Friday morning.
His lungs showed changes consistent with metastases, and sadly his heart stopped beating while under anesthesia.

‘No cuts’ to child benefits for EU-migrants
An internal paper from the EU Commission suggests that there will be no measures to reduce the amount of child benefit payments paid to EU migrants whose children are resident in their native country - something Austria has called for.
Austrian ministers had written a letter to the EU Commission requesting that if, for example, a Romanian couple are resident in Austria but their children live in Romania - then the child benefit money they are eligible for should be reduced to the amount they could claim in Romania.
The child benefit allowance is much lower in countries like Romania and Bulgaria. Austria's benefits for families are very generous, accounting for around 2.8 percent of the country's GDP compared to the EU average of 2.4 percent.

Fiaker horse carriages apply for UNESCO status.
The drivers of Vienna’s famous fiaker, the horse-drawn carriages for hire in the city centre, have applied for UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status - in a bid to protect what they say is a tradition under threat.
Vienna’s Spanish Riding School and its coffee house culture have already been recognised as part of Austria’s cultural heritage. A decision on whether the fiaker will be added to the list is expected next year.

As usual, when I was recently in Vienna, me and my guests took a trip in a fiaker, something I have done whenever I visit the city. I cannot see why they should be refused UNSCO status, they are as Viennese as strudel, coffee and sachertorte, LL

UPDATE ON FATE OF HITLER BIRTHPLACE
Austrian MPs have voted to expropriate the home where Adolf Hitler was born, ending years of bitter legal wrangling with the current owner over the infamous building's future.
A large majority approved the new law, which was submitted by the government earlier this year in a bid to stop the dilapidated house in the northern town of Braunau am Inn from becoming a neo-Nazi shrine.
Local resident Gerlinde Pommer -- who has been renting the premises to the Austrian state since 1972 -- will receive compensation under the legislation.
It is not yet clear what will happen with the yellow corner house at Number 15 Salzburger Vorstadt Street, located right in Braunau's historic centre.

Re: News from Austria
Bomb scare at Vienna's Rathausplatz Christmas market a false alarm.
A 48-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday at the Christmas market on Vienna’s Rathausplatz after witnesses heard him saying he had a bomb.
A large scale police operation was launched with specially trained sniffer dogs used to detect explosives, and shortly afterwards the man, who is originally from Serbia, was arrested. He didn’t have a bomb but he was found to be very drunk, with a blood alcohol level of 1.6 per mille.
Witnesses at Vienna’s largest and busiest Christmas market heard the Serbian man asking another man who he didn’t know: “What would you say if I had a bomb?” The man called the police, who sent a special counter-terrorism unit to the Rathausplatz.
The man was later set free from police custody and a report of the incident has been sent to the prosecutor’s office.
This is the market I visited when I was in Vienna in November. LL

Rathausplatz is a very crowded area at this time of the year, and shooting could cause mayhem amongst the hundreds of shoppers. They would probably use the dogs - less blood spill. Austrian police tend to be less gun happy than some I could name. LLbb1 wrote:What a fool - he's lucky he wasn't shot first and questions asked later.

Austrian police crack international people-smuggling gang
Police in Lower Austria have busted an unscrupulous people-smuggling gang which raked in around €15m over the past decade by sending migrants to Vienna by boat, plane and overland - often in the most awful conditions.
The Turkish gang used “three trafficking routes through the Balkans and Ukraine to transport people illegally to Vienna,” Lower Austrian police director Franz Prucher said. One recent case involved seven men who were imprisoned for four days in a tanker with a litre of water.

Terror suspect arrested in raid on refugee home in Salzburg state.
A 25-year-old asylum seeker from Morocco was arrested on Monday morning after a police raid at a refugee home in Fuschl in the state of Salzburg, suspected of planning an attack in Austria.
Austrian authorities say that they believe he “was planning a serious offence in the period between Christmas and New Year in Salzburg".
Police reportedly received a tip-off about the Moroccan in November. During the raid they had back-up from Cobra special forces, an anti-terror unit, sniffer dogs and explosives experts.

PUBLISHED: 07:13, Wed, Dec 21, 2016 | UPDATED: 08:25, Wed, Dec 21, 2016
The Somali asylum seeker suddenly leapt on stage during the traditional depiction of the Christian story in the Austrian town of Oberndorf near Schwanenstadt in the state of Upper Austria, causing horror and upset amongst the children and parents.
At first, no one had reacted when the asylum seeker came to the venue and stood next to the stage where children of nursery school age were performing.
The asylum seeker suddenly leapt on stage, took out a copy of the Koran from his rucksack and started preaching.
The 24-year-old, who was wearing a white robe, was eventually overpowered by a number of men, including two brothers, while he was shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Missing moggy found in time for Christmas after four years
An Austrian couple received the best Christmas present after their cat which had been missing for more than four years reappeared in time for the holiday.
Three-year-old Felix failed to return to his home in Vienna’s Penzing district in summer 2012.
He’s now been found on the other side of the city in Simmering and was taken to an animal shelter where vets were able to identify him by his microchip.
His owners, Elisabeth and Franz M., said they had looked everywhere for their much-loved moggy and had hung up missing posters but with no success. Then they got a call that he had been found at the weekend. Elisabeth (57) said she was astonished as she had given up hope that he would ever be found.
"He began to purr when he saw us, and I really felt that he recognized us, despite being gone for such a long time," Elisabeth said. "He still responds to his name and has returned to his old habit of sleeping under the duvet.”
Felix, who is now seven, is in good health after his adventures - apart from a few bruises and some weight loss.

Re: News from Austria
Expat food choice widens in Vienna with Bobby's
Good news indeed; I have, when visiting Vienna, always popped into Bobby's for assorted items not available elsewhere.British and American expats living in Vienna will be able to get traditional treats from back home while Christmas shopping after Bobby's supermarket opened up a new store on the Mariahilferstrasse.
Located at the Westbahnhof end of the busy shopping street, the second branch of the foodstore which is already a fashionable hit in Vienna's fourth district is now also accessible on the city's main shopping street.
The main store on Schliefmühlgasse came into existence after British-born businessman Johnny Szewczuk, 51, decided to open the first of a number of pubs that he now runs in the city, and needed to import a lot of the things he wanted to sell like crisps, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages such as cider.
Realising it was impossible to buy the stuff locally, he then decided to try and sell it to the strong expat community in the city, and the supermarket idea was born. But the now famous Bobby's supermarket does not sell warm food, and for some time now he's wanted to add a second address where some of the things on sale can be heated up and tried out by customers.
So every day there is a selection of curries, pies and soups being sold which are the perfect thing during a cold winter shopping expedition to take a break, and warm up.
The store also sells a selection of sweets and drinks, biscuits, marmalades, sauces, cereals and other traditional items from English-speaking countries that are available in the main store in the fourth district.
But despite the warm food, the main reason everybody is visiting the store at the moment is to buy Christmas crackers, the traditional British festival item that adorns the dinner table every December.

Illegal immigrant caught and accused of 30 year old murder
An illegal immigrant has been detained in Vienna after his fingerprints matched those of a murder suspect who went missing 30 years ago.
The unnamed 56-year-old Serbian national was arrested after officers unearthed that he had entered and was staying in the country illegally.
But when officers took fingerprints, as is routine procedure, they got the shock of their lives to find they had probably just helped to solve a German murder from three decades ago.
