Taliban leader tries (and fails) to get asylum in Germany

A few weeks ago an Afghan man flew into Frankfurt Airport with his family and applied for asylum. An investigation revealed he was in fact a senior member of the Taliban, Spiegel reports.   (16 December 2016)

The man flew to Germany from Riad, the capital of Saudi Arabia and tried to pass through customs on a fake passport. But when federal police realized he wasn't who he said he was, the man applied for asylum for himself and his family.

When the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) checked his identity they realized he was none other than Abdul Rauf Mohammed, health minister when the fundamentalist Taliban ruled Afghanistan in the 1990s.

Three people have been injured during a shooting at an Islamic centre in Switzerland.

The shooting took place in central Zurich on Monday evening, local media reported.

Zurich police confirmed three people had been hurt, but gave no more details.

According to Swiss newspaper, Blick, police sealed off an area close to the main train station in Switzerland’s financial capital.

The 20 Minuten newspaper reported that a suspect was on the run following the incident.

Hope they're OK, LL - it looks lovely.

Several cities in the UK put concrete barriers round their street markets so these savages couldn't mount an attack like this. Why we should have to put up with this is a mystery to me.

Got an email, they and the lady they look after are okay.   The property is down a side street and neither they or the other tenants were out when it happened.   They are coming here midweek to spend Christmas with me and my second son.   I do hope second son won't be called to duty over this and what has happened in Turkey today.    LL

Glad your friends are OK, LL, it must be a worry.

I suspect Erdogan and Putin will deal with the Turkish killer in their own way, so hopefully, your son won't be dragged in.

The killer is already dead; I do not understand why they didn't shoot to disable, ie shoulder shot, then they could have asked him who was behind this killing. Erdogan will use it to issue more decrees against all and sundry, let us hope Putin can rein him in. LL.

There's actually no such thing as 'shooting to disable' in practice - how were they to know if he had a suicide belt and would have taken them all out?

They will find out who is behind it without too much trouble - they only have to look at his computer or phone.

I have been told many times that the preferred method of immobilizing someone is to shoot at the knees.  You don't want them running away......
