Russia's ambassador to Ankara shot

Russia's ambassador to Ankara has been shot and wounded in a gun attack in the Turkish capital, according to Turkish media.

Andrey Karlov was speaking at a photo exhibition when he was shot in the back multiple times on Monday evening, Turkish media said.

Russia's ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov has been seriously injured in a gun attack in the Turkish capital.

According to the private NTV news channel, Turkish police have shot dead the gunman.

Earlier, there were reports of an ongoing hostage situation as special forces sealed off the building.

It was unclear whether the Mr Karlov is still inside the building, although the Russian Foreign Ministry said he had been taken to hospital.

Three other people injured were still inside the gallery, according to reports.

The ambassador had been attending an art exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Centre in the Cankaya area of Ankara, along with other dignitaries and media.

The gunman is understood to have entered the gallery with a police ID and opened fire on the ambassador as he made a speech.

A photographer from Associated Press who had been at the exhibition said the gunman had been wearing a suit and tie and had shouted "Allahu Akbar" before firing at least eight shots.


I suspect his jihadist chums may be about to find out that Russians and Turks tend to go looking for payback.....

The ambassador was shot dead on live TV, Lily - I think the cameras were still running when his killer was shot, as there are pictures of his bullet riddled corpse floating around.

The Russian state media outlet TASS, citing the HaberTurk (literally "Turkish News") news outlet, says that the gunman was dismissed from the police during investigations into this summer's coup, and was a member of FETO, Gulen's organization.

None of this has been confirmed yet. What we do know is that, so far, the Turkish government has quickly linked this assassination with the summer coup, suggesting that Erdogan wants to ensure that his government is seen as working with, rather than against, the Russians.

What a bloody sick f*****! 

At least Erdogan is smart in that regard.

I doubt if his family think Altintas is much of a hero right this minute, after a night spent with Erdogan's police.

The moron has:

1. Given Erdogan the perfect excuse for an even tighter clamp down, and more purging.

2. Brought Turkey and Russia closer together.

Altintas was an utter fool, not least because the dead Ambassador was involved in the complicated negotiations to get the 'brave rebels' out of Aleppo. And his inspiration may well have been the Fake News videos cooked up by the 'White Helmets' and others.
