Aha, HM is just pipped by Ramesses the Great at 66 years on the throne, but maybe he doesn't count......
Strange to think that no-one under about 70 has ever known another UK monarch or head of the Commonwealth.

Ramses was a great king, but as you say, he doesn't really count in Western history. Did you know he was a redhead and fair-skinned? From Wikipedia -bb1 wrote:Aha, HM is just pipped by Ramesses the Great at 66 years on the throne, but maybe he doesn't count......

He also had aquiline featurs, ie more Caucasian than Egyptian. LLMicroscopic inspection of the roots of Ramesses II's hair proved that the king's hair was originally red, which suggests that he came from a family of redheads. This has more than just cosmetic significance: in ancient Egypt people with red hair were associated with the god Seth, the slayer of Osiris, and the name of Ramesses II's father, Seti I, means "follower of Seth." Another study found that Ramasses II was fair-skinned.

I don't know where this bizarre notion came from that the ancient Egyptians were sub-Saharan, LL, they aren't now and weren't then....
I loved that when the mummy of Ramesses was taken to France for work in the '70's, he was given a full military escort as if he was still reigning - maybe they were onto something with the 'immortality' stuff?
I hope HM is with us for a long time; I am no great flag-waver, but constitutional monarchies do seem to be the most stable form of government, providing you have a good 'un.
Charles bothers me, what with the lectures about so called 'global warming' among other things. I understand there are a lot of prophecies that claim he will never take the throne?

I remember as a child there were many such comments. I don't know very much about the ramifications when the Queern dies but I can't see Charles abdicating in favor of William, but I don't think I would like to see the camel as 'queen' but that's just me. LL

Ah well, I don't mind Camilla, LL, I find her a very sensible, down to earth woman, and it's a pity Charles wasn't allowed to marry her in the first place. I didn't greatly like Diana, I found her a vacuous airhead who would NOT have made a good job of queening.
Good God, all she had to do was keep her knickers on till the boys were 18, and she couldn't even manage that.
No, it's Charles himself I am none too keen on; he does come up with some sound ideas, but then he goes and says and does something that reeks of spoiled entitlement.

I remember when her father died. I think the Queen has, and still does, a wonderful job and serves the Nation admirably.
In all honesty I simply dread the day Charles becomes King. He's too spoiled and strange in many ways for my taste, as ruler of the UK and Leader of the Commonwealth.
