Re: Yazidi refugees “didn’t even stay a week in Portugal”
Diário de Notícias actually calls their flight “illegal abandonment”, as the terms of these people’s asylum means they will be ordered to return to national soil when/ if they are detected.
But the law is peverse, explains Gomes. Municipalities that take refugees in (in this case, Guimarães council) are responsible for their permanence “but cannot impede departures, as refugees are at liberty to circulate” throughout Europe’s Schengen space.
Guimarães will, for example, have told the group that they stood to lose all their rights to help and support the minute they turned their backs on the asylum programme - but as Gomes explains, this won’t have made much difference to people who may have arrived with completely different ideas over what they mean to do with their futures than may be possible for them in Portugal.
A reader’s comment on DN puts this likelihood starkly, with the question: “Why would they want to stay if Costa wants them to clean our forests?” (referring to prime minister António Costa’s plan, announced last year, to take in double the amount of refugees set out by European quotas, to help clear Portugal’s overgrown forestland).
Because if you are fleeing for your lives and given a safe haven, it might be a good idea to repay your debt to the country that has given you shelter?
Thank the Lord the UK is in neither Schengen nor the Euro - though perhaps if EU policies hadn't driven so many young people out of Portugal, they wouldn't need to be importing labour in the first place.

So, give us your refugees, your hungry masses, your persecuted millions (not quite that number but you know what I mean!) and we will send them to clear the forests - now what would you call that? LL

In this case, a good deal, LL.
Given the choice between getting murdered by ISIS crazies, watching your menfolk tortured to death by ISIS crazies, and seeing your wives and daughters raped and sold in slavery by ISIS crazies, and clearing dead timber and shrubs in Portugal....well then, pass me the axe!
This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that gives 'refugees' a bad name. I have never forgotten one of the first lot that arrived in Scotland. Did he thank people for giving him and his family shelter?
No, the first words out of his mouth were, At last, we can all get our illnesses treated on your NHS.
Remember, that poor little boy whose death was turned into a hashtag by the handwringers did NOT drown because of evil Western immigration policies. He drowned because his ghastly father wanted free dental work courtesy of evil Western taxpayers.
