Fire engulfs Grenfell tower block in west London

Flammable cladding that helped the inferno which destroyed the Grenfell tower is already illegal on tall buildings in Britain, Philip Hammond claimed today.
The Chancellor said criminal probes and a public inquiry into the disaster would answer why the controversial material was used.
It emerged today that the cladding installed on Grenfell was not designed for use on buildings taller than 10metres high - a fraction of the 67metre Grenfell block.
The Department for Communities and Local Government said cladding with a flammable core - like that used on Grenfell Tower - was banned on buildings over 18metres high.
A breach of building regulations is a criminal offence with unlimited fines.

Commander Cundy also said that today's searches suggest that there may have been people inside the tower who have not been reported missing.
'I must consider the fact that there may be others in the building who, for whatever reason, have not been reported to us.
'There is also a real possibility that there may be people in the building that no one knows are missing.'
'I want to hear from anyone who believes that they know someone who may have been living, staying or visiting but has not yet been reported missing to us.

'We are not interested in your reasons for not telling us sooner, we just want to understand as best as we can who may still be inside the building.'

Finsbury Park Mosque: Man dies as van hits pedestrians.

A man has died and eight people have been injured after a van ploughed into pedestrians near a north London mosque.

The van mounted the pavement and struck a group of people just after midnight near Finsbury Park Mosque in Seven Sisters Road. A 48-year-old man has been arrested.

Counter terrorism officers are at the scene, the Metropolitan Police said.

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said a van "intentionally" ran over worshippers.

Many of the victims are believed to have just left evening prayers after breaking the Ramadan fast.

The MCB said it was a "violent manifestation of Islamophbia" and called for extra security around mosques.

Prime Minister Theresa May will chair an emergency meeting later and said police were treating it "as a potential terrorist attack".

She described it as a "terrible incident", adding: "All my thoughts are with those who have been injured, their loved ones and the emergency services on the scene."

The van driver was arrested after being detained by members of the public at the scene following the collision at 00:20 BST.

Abdulrahman Saleh Alamoudi said he was among a group of people helping an elderly worshipper who had fallen down when the van swerved towards them.

Video posted online of the aftermath showed a scene of chaos as people tried to help the injured.

One man could be seen giving CPR to a victim in the street while another man's head injury was treated with a makeshift dressing.

An eyewitness told how he jumped out the way of the van as it struck.

He said: "He just came into all of us. There was a lot of people. We got told to move straight away.

"I was shocked, shocked, shocked. There were bodies around me.

"Thank God I just moved to the side. I just jumped. Everyone is hurt. Everyone is actually hurt."

Another who lives in a flat on Seven Sisters Road told the BBC she saw people "shouting and screaming".

"Everyone was shouting 'a van's hit people'.

"There was this white van stopped outside Finsbury Park Mosque that seems to have hit people who were coming out of the mosque after prayers finished."

She said the road was "backed up" with police cars, ambulance and fire engines.

Labour leader and Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn said on Twitter: "I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight.

"I've been in touch with the mosques, police and Islington council regarding the incident. My thoughts are with those and the community affected by this awful event."

London Ambulance Service deputy director of operations Kevin Bate said: "We have sent a number of ambulance crews, advance paramedics and specialist responses teams to the scene.

"An advance trauma team from London's Air Ambulance has also been dispatched by car.

"We are working closely with other members of the emergency services at the scene.

"Our priority is to assess the level and nature of injuries and ensure those in the most need are treated first and taken to hospital."

Witness Cynthia Vanzella said on Twitter: "Horrible to watch police officers doing cardiac massage at people on the floor, desperately trying to save them. I just hope they did."

The MCB said its "prayers are with the victims."

A man who was mistaken for a Tory councillor and beaten up by activists who stormed Kensington Town Hall in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy has been left injured and badly shaken by the incident.

Robert Outram, 56, had spent much of last week volunteering at the makeshift shelters set up to help victims of the deadly blaze.

But the father of two, a financial consultant whose firm is employed by Kensington and Chelsea Council, was at the council offices when despair turned into angry protests on Friday.

Dressed in a suit, he was apparently deemed a legitimate a target by protesters who set upon him, pushing him to the ground and pouring water on him.

He said he and a colleague were suddenly attacked as they entered the building after someone shouted "It's them two".

​His wife, Angela Outram, said: "He got a big bang on the head, he was thumped, he’s been left with a lump on the side of his head. He was really shaken up by it all.

“He had nothing to do with any of this. In fact, he's been volunteering to help the victims.

"The council didn’t warn anyone about this protest. His picture is online with the wrong name attached to it.”

Organisers of the annual Al-Quds Day parade in central London have sparked fury after attempting to blame the Grenfell Tower tragedy on "Zionists".

The number of people killed in the Grenfell Tower fire has risen to 79 - but that figure could still change, police say.

Fighting back tears as he spoke, Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said five people had been formally identified - but warned that some victims may never be identified.

"The awful reality is, as I've said before, is that due to the intensity of the fire and the devastation within Grenfell Tower that we may not be able to identify everybody that died," he said.

BREAKING: Screaming man 'attacks police officer with knife' at London train station
A MAN has tried to attack a police officer at a major London train station, reports say.

The incident happened this lunchtime at Paddington Station.

Pictures quickly emerged of two police officers and a member of the public trying to restrain the man.

It is understood the man was armed with a knife, with a witness reporting that he was shouting "Allahu Akbar".

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Paddington rail station following reports of a man acting suspiciously.

This #lovewins stuff doesn't seem to be going awfully well.

Did they shoot him? And if not then why not?

Firefighters successfully tackled the fridge fire that started the Grenfell Tower thought there was job was done and began to leave - only realising how quickly it had spread when they stepped outside.
Units were called to what they believed to be a standard fridge fire at the doomed high-rise, and within minutes told residents the fire was out in the flat.
The crew was leaving the building when firefighters outside spotted flames rising up the side of the building, BBC Panorama has uncovered.
The Fire Brigades Union say firefighters were left facing an unprecedented fire, and officers broke their own safety protocol to rescue people.

Firefighters had put out the initial fridge fire at Grenfell Tower and were leaving the building when the blaze suddenly flared up, it has emerged.

Crews believed they had put out the fire at the London high-rise and were astonished to see flames rising up the side of the building, new reports have claimed.

Shortly after dealing with the fridge fire early last Wednesday, firefighters were telling residents that it was out, BBC Panorama reported.

But, soon after, the 24-storey building was consumed by flames in one of Britain's biggest ever tower block fires that left at least 79 people dead.

Panorama on Monday night reported that firefighters had seen flames "shooting up" the side of the building.

Those reports will add weight to claims that it was the cladding on the exterior of Grenfell Tower that caused the fire to spread so rapidly....etc

So, where does this leave the 'eye witness' who claimed to have seen the resident of the flat leaving with suitcases while his kitchen blazed behind the open door?

It clearly wasn't true, and the 'eye witness' made the man a target of suspicion and conspiracy theories.

Death toll cover-ups, media blackouts and D-notices – what's the truth behind the Grenfell Tower conspiracy theories?

My daily commute takes me past Grenfell Tower. When I first saw the burnt-out building from the train window last Thursday morning, it came as a shock. Even though images of the blaze and its aftermath had filled news bulletins throughout the previous day, seeing the tower block without the filter of a TV screen was utterly gut-wrenching.

Plainly there are questions about the tragedy that require urgent answers – not only about how this disaster could have happened but also about the lackadaisical response from the local council in its aftermath. No wonder those residents who escaped the fire are angry: what they have been through is frankly unimaginable.

In the absence of clear leadership, however, some of that anger has been channelled into conspiracy theories that simply don’t stack up. Walking out of Kensington Olympia station on Friday I heard a woman having a heated conversation on her mobile phone, angry at the failings of politicians to respond effectively to the catastrophe.

What made matters worse, I heard her say, was that the Government was deliberately covering up the Grenfell Tower death toll – known by everyone on the ground, she continued, to be at least 100.

At the time, the number of confirmed deaths was 17, although the police had been clear from the beginning that the death toll was likely to be significantly higher.

Shortly afterwards, Lily Allen told Channel 4 News that firefighters had told her that close to 150 people had been killed. She went on to say that the death count was being was being “downplayed by the mainstream media”. Ramping up the establishment cover-up theory, The Swawkbox blog then claimed the Government had issued a defence notice (D-notice) to ensure a media blackout.

Quite where the D-notice theory came from is unclear. D-notices – now formally known as DSMA-notices – are a standing set of non-binding requests relating to the media’s coverage of UK military operations, assets and personnel. They exist as part of a voluntary arrangement between the Government and the media, and they are publicly available should anyone wish to consult them. While the committee that oversees the system occasionally issues guidance in relation to one of the five standing D-notices, new ones are not simply issued at the whim of the Government.

If the D-notice theory was demonstrably wrong, it is perhaps easier to understand the broader idea of a conspiracy of silence over the number of fatalities at Grenfell Tower. Early statements from the authorities confirmed six deaths, then 12, then 17 – even though, with dozens of people missing, it was fairly obvious that the final death toll would be much higher.

Nevertheless, neither the police, nor the Government, nor the media at any stage suggested that those early figures would not be revised upwards. That relevant agencies were seeking to approach the difficult task of accounting for the missing and identifying the dead with due rigour hardly seems to be something that is worthy of criticism. Today, 79 people are confirmed to have died or are presumed dead. The figure may rise again, but this is not the stuff of cover-ups.

Still, the fact that so many people are ready to believe that it is possible for the truth about the Grenfell Tower victims to be kept under wraps should concern us as a society. It shows that faith in government and in key authorities, including the police, has been thoroughly eroded. It demonstrates too that some people are more ready to believe rumours and social media than what is so dismissively referred to as the “MSM”.

Past experience is partly to blame – look at how long it took for the truth to come out about Hillsborough. The present, very real failures of politicians and others either to prevent last week’s tragedy or to respond effectively to it inspire further distrust. In that context, cynicism seems entirely reasonable.

The problem with such extreme cynicism, however, is that it assumes – without due reason – ulterior motives on the part of good people. It also feeds a destructive belief that a shady establishment is deliberately lying to “the people” for its own corrupt ends. And in the end, it can enable real misdeeds to be hidden because anger comes to be directed at imagined monstrosities.

We should all ask questions about the Grenfell Tower disaster – but they must be the right questions if we are to get to the answers we need.

Ah, but shouting and bawling about 'cover ups' suits Corbyn and his thugs down to the ground - so much easier than finding out what actually happened!

Already, from Panorama, we've found out that what we thought we knew - we didn't, that a fridge really did go on fire, and the fire brigade thought they'd extinguished it.

How can anyone know what the death toll is? It's not like a plane crash, where there is a proper manifest. Some people may have been there as legitimate guests for dinner, etc., but it's now coming out that a lot of the properties were being illegally sub-let.

Logic and reason never did suit howling mobs, though.
