IURD managed international child trafficking network

Several of the minors received in the illegal home of children were robbed of their mothers. Dozens of families affected.


The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, known as the IURD, operated an international network of child trafficking through illegal adoptions, which affected Portuguese mothers who saw their children stolen. The cases, which occurred in the 1990s, are reported by TVI. According to the Queluz de Baixo station, IURD managed a legal home, the Universal Home, which housed children delivered by Social Security or by the mothers themselves. The children received at this institution were then handed over to bishops and pastors of the church. Without the mothers being informed or making any decision, the children were 'stolen' from the biological family and taken out of the country, in particular to Brazil and the United States of America. Dozens of families will have been affected by the IURD scheme. The Universal Home was located first in Camarate and then in Gago Coutinho Avenue, in the center of Lisbon. According to TVI, the mothers appealed to the authorities to try to recover their children but they did not get an answer. The cases will be denounced in a series of ten reports entitled 'The Secret of the Gods', which will be shown until December 22. TVI further guarantees that the grandchildren of the IURD leader, Edir Macedo, were illegally adopted after being removed from the Universal Home. They will be the children of Edir Macedo's two daughters.
