Earthquake Hits Turkey: Hundreds Feared Dead
An earthquake has hit eastern Turkey killing at least 75 people with hundreds more feared dead and causing the collapse of at least 45 buildings.
The 7.2 magnitude quake shook the town of Ercis, in the mountainous eastern province of Van, close to the Iranian border.
The city of Van has also suffered substantial damage.
Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said: "Around 10 buildings have collapsed in the city of Van and around 25 or 30 have collapsed in Ercis, including a dormitory."
Rescuers look for survivors in a collapsed building
Residents helped rescue workers using their bare hands to shift lumps of concrete and debris as they struggled to find people believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings.
The quake had a depth of 20km (12.4 miles), which is relatively shallow and could potentially cause more damage.
Mustafa Erdik from the Kandilli Observatory said: "We estimate around 1,000 buildings are damaged and our estimate is for hundreds of lives lost. It could be 500 or 1,000."
In response to the earthquake Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "Today's earthquake in eastern turkey has caused immense destruction, resulting in terrible loss of life.
"I send my deepest condolences to the friends and loved ones of those who have died or been affected. My thoughts are with those who are anxiously waiting news from the rescue efforts.
"The UK is ready to provide assistance, in line with any request from the Turkish authorities. We stand with Turkey at this difficult time."
Earthquakes are not rare occurences in Turkey, many parts of which lie on a major seismic fault line.
In 1999, about 18,000 people were killed by two powerful earthquakes that struck Izamit in northwestern Turkey.

Yes it is, Pedro. Sometimes those shocks are almost as strong as the first quake.

Baby Survives 46 Hours In Rubble After Quake
A 14-day-old baby has miraculously survived 46 hours trapped in rubble after a powerful earthquake struck in southeast Turkey.
As the death toll climbed and rescuers hopes of finding more survivors were fading, they plucked the newborn to safety in what was to be a rescue hat trick of three generations of the same family.
The little girl, named locally as Azra Karaduman, was quickly wrapped in a blanket and whisked away in an ambulance to the sound of overjoyed rescuers clapping.
Search and rescue workers than quickly turned their efforts to the infant's mother Seniha who was alive but buried in the wreckage of their home in the town of Ercis.
Hours later the woman emerged on a stretcher and was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors say she was in good health.
Two-week-old Azra survived 46 hours in the rubble after the earthquake
Soon after, the rescue teams saved Azra's 73-year-old paternal grandmother Selin Yigit who was also trapped inside.
The girl's father is believed to be still missing, local reports said.

Re: Earthquake Hits Turkey - Hundreds Feared Dead
It only happened a very short time ago. It's on CNN at present. Many buildings have collapsed, one a hotel with guests who may be trapped. So far, no mention of casualties, but until they can get into the collapsed buildings they can't state there are dead and injured.
