WEAR YOUR POPPY WITH PRIDE
Many thanks to Tony for reminding everyone of that poignant verse:
http://thehoundingofthemccans.blogspot.com/?zx=bd7d5ff2f7285e1a
"Please wear a poppy," the lady said
And held one forth, but I shook my head.
Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there,
And her face was old and lined with care;
But beneath the scars the years had made
There remained a smile that refused to fade.
A boy came whistling down the street,
Bouncing along on care-free feet.
His smile was full of joy and fun,
"Lady," said he, "may I have one?"
When she'd pinned it on he turned to say,
"Why do we wear a poppy today?"
The lady smiled in her wistful way
And answered, "This is Remembrance Day,
And the poppy there is the symbol for
The gallant men who died in war.
And because they did, you and I are free -
That's why we wear a poppy, you see."
"I had a boy about your size,
With golden hair and big blue eyes.
He loved to play and jump and shout,
Free as a bird he would race about.
As the years went by he learned and grew
and became a man - as you will, too."
"He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,
But he'd seemed with us such a little while
When war broke out and he went away.
I still remember his face that day
When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye,
I'll be back soon, Mom, so please don't cry."
"But the war went on and he had to stay,
And all I could do was wait and pray.
His letters told of the awful fight,
(I can see it still in my dreams at night),
With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire,
And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire."
"Till at last, at last, the war was won -
And that's why we wear a poppy son."
The small boy turned as if to go,
Then said, "Thanks, lady, I'm glad to know.
That sure did sound like an awful fight,
But your son - did he come back all right?"
A tear rolled down each faded check;
She shook her head, but didn't speak.
I slunk away in a sort of shame,
And if you were me you'd have done the same;
For our thanks, in giving, is oft delayed,
Though our freedom was bought - and thousands paid!
And so when we see a poppy worn,
Let us reflect on the burden borne,
By those who gave their very all
When asked to answer their country's call
That we at home in peace might live.
Please wear a poppy! Remember - and give!

No HB they are not. But, Americans were not the only ones who died so I respectfully posted a British poem along with one for our dead.honestbroker wrote:Is Remembrance Day marked with poppies in America, as well?

Freedom Isn't Free
I watched the flag pass one day,
It fluttered in the breeze...
A young soldier saluted it, & then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform,
So young, so tall, so proud...
With hair cut square & eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him,
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many Mother's tears?
How many pilots' plane shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers graves?
NO FREEDOM ISN'T FREE....
I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still.
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That taps had meant "Amen"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
of Mothers and the wives,
of Fathers, sons, and husbands
with interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard at the
Bottom of the sea,
of unmarked graves in Arlington...
NO FREEDOM ISN'T FREE

Queen Leads Tributes To Britain's War Dead
The Queen has led the nation in the annual Remembrance Sunday commemorations in honour of those who have given their lives in war.
Services were held across the country to pay tribute to members of the UK's Armed Forces who have died in conflict.
After a two-minute silence at 11am, the Queen laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in London to honour the fallen.
Other senior royals also left floral tributes at the memorial, including Prince Charles and his son, the Duke of Cambridge.
ALASTAIR BRUCE AT POPPY MEMORIAL
Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Labour leader Ed Miliband also laid wreaths at the Cenotaph.
Thousands of ex-servicemen and women attended the traditional ceremony and later staged a march past the Cenotaph.
Forces at Camp Bastion, Britain's largest base in Afghanistan, and other military outposts across the world held their own services.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: "The public hugely respects and admires what our service people do and the professionalism with which they do it.
"We're here today to remember those who sadly have paid the ultimate price."
Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely, the Royal British Legion's national president, said Remembrance Sunday was a time for the nation to unite in its reverence for our Armed Forces, both past and present.
"When we bow our heads in reflection, we remember those who fought for our freedom during the two World Wars, but we also mourn and honour those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts," he said.
"Today, with troops on duty in Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world, remembrance, and the two-minute silence, are as important as ever."
On Saturday night, the Queen was joined by veterans and their families for the annual Festival of Remembrance at London's Royal Albert Hall.
X Factor star Joe McElderry, singer Katherine Jenkins and Sir Cliff Richard performed at the event, as well as a choir made up of the wives of soldiers serving in Afghanistan.
The festival concluded with a two-minute silence as thousands of poppy petals fluttered from the roof, each representing a life lost in war.

I was very surprised to discover this yesterday, as I really didn't know.
Poppy became US national emblem of remembrance in 1920, and 1921 in the UK

Re: WEAR YOUR POPPY WITH PRIDE
An American verse -
http://thehoundingofthemccans.blogspot.com/2011/11/today-as-uk-remember-their-heroes-i.html
WE SHALL KEEP THE FAITH.
Oh! You who sleep in Flanders’ fields,
Sleep sweet - to rise anew,
We caught the torch you threw,
And holding high we kept
The faith with those who died.
We cherish too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valour led.
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders’ fields.
And now the torch and poppy red
Wear in honour of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught
We’ve learned the lesson that ye taught
In Flanders’ fields.

Justin Timberlake Keeps Date With Marine

11:48am UK, Monday November 14, 2011
Justin Timberlake has kept his promise to a servicewoman and taken her on a date to a ball in Virginia.
Corporal Kelsey De Santis invited the singer-turned-actor to the Instructor Battalion Marine Corps Ball via a YouTube video in July.
She was inspired to reach out to Timberlake after he publicly encouraged Mila Kunis, his Friends With Benefits co-star, to accept a similar invitation from a serviceman.
"What I didn't know was how moved I would be by the whole experience," Timberlake, 30, posted afterwards on his website.
Marine Sergeant Scott Moore and Mila Kunis
Of the time the two spent together, Timberlake wrote: "She seemed to me to be so humble and honest.
"Very cool. She also simultaneously seemed like she was nervous about the whole evening and if I was going to enjoy myself.
"'Are you okay?' she asked two or three times. 'I hope you are having fun. I know you will once my crew of friends get here to the table.'
He went on to say: "I have to tell you, it's not every day that I meet a 23-year-old girl and she's more worried about if I'm having fun or if I'm comfortable.
"It hit me all of a sudden that these were the type of people that look after us and our freedom. Humble, concerned for others before themselves.
"This was the type of person our Marine Corps was building. I was really blown away."
Timberlake had been wooed to the ball via video, when his Marine made her plea on YouTube.
"So, Justin," she said in her online invite.
"I'm going to call you out and ask you to come to the Marine Corps ball with me on Nov 12. And if you can't go, all I have to say is, cry me a river."
