'Insane' Norwegian Killer 'Shouldn't Be Tried'
http://news.sky.com/home/world-news/article/16120049
Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik is insane and should not be punished, an official report has recommended.
The 243-page psychiatric report says the 32-year-old was mentally ill and therefore not responsible for his actions when he killed a total of 77 people.
It says he has developed paranoid schizophrenia and should be detained indefinitely at a psychiatric hospital.
Public prosecutor Svein Holden told a packed press conference that experts had "described a person who lives in his own delusional universe".
He said the report concluded: "He believes he is chosen to determine who is to live and who is to die.
"Breivik stated that he committed these 'executions' out of love for his people. He describes himself as the most perfect knight since the Second World War."
The report followed 13 meetings between Breivik and a team of psychiatrists.
If the recommendations are accepted, Breivik cannot be sent to prison but will instead be confined to a secure psychiatric unit. The court will then meet every three years to decide if he is still a danger to society.
He can be released if he is later deemed to be "cured and well".
Had he been found sane and sent to prison, he could have received a maximum sentence of 20 years.
Breivik has confessed to the killings, which he committed in a shooting spree at a youth retreat on Utoya island and a car bomb attack in Oslo.
Public prosecutors can theoretically decide to ignore the conclusions of the psychiatric report, although such decisions are highly unusual.
The full report will be presented at Breivik's next court hearing on April 16.
========================
It probably sounds like a soft option to US readers, but it means he will probably be locked up for the rest of his life.
And it's a masterstroke ruling that he is insane - no grandstanding in court, no platform for his hate speech, no chance of spreading terror. No martyrdom, nothing.
Just ruled a lunatic and locked away. It may well be the worst way Norway could punish him.

Gotcha, Bonny. He wanted to talk in court at a previous appearance and wear his uniform? The ruling makes sense.

Re: 'Insane' Norwegian Killer 'Shouldn't Be Tried'
So he did, Lily - I'd forgotten that. Hopefully, he will now be kept away from society till he is no longer a threat - with no soapbox.
He will not be at all happy at not getting what he wanted, though - I would not be at all surprised if he tried some stunt in his efforts to be an Aryan Martyr.
I do hope he is looked after in his confinement by some members of the ethnic minorities he so despises....it will further rub in his own failures.

I bet that the mental facility will be aware of his leanings for martyrdom and will be prepared?

Re: 'Insane' Norwegian Killer 'Shouldn't Be Tried'
Bound to be, Lily.
I was annoyed - though I should have expected it - at B$own's knee-jerk reaction to it; though it did show yet again what a fool the woman is.
What did she think was going to happen - that Norway was going to bring back the death penalty for him, give him the same end as they did for his fellow-Fascist Quisling?
She really is somewhere beyond ignorant if she thought that Breivik was going to be allowed to manipulate the authorities to put on the kind of grand circus he longed for.

In all honesty, she is the type of American you hope and pray that you will not come across when traveling overseas. Loud, arrogant, pushy, annoying, ill-mannered and yes, ignorant.
Everyone else is horrified.

Re: 'Insane' Norwegian Killer 'Shouldn't Be Tried'
No-one would have cared greatly if Breivik had been shot by the police on the island, but as he wasn't, I don't see why the authorities should have had to deal with him on HIS terms - I hope this is him permanently silenced.

Re: 'Insane' Norwegian Killer 'Shouldn't Be Tried'
Does anyone know why B$own thinks Far Right White Supremacists can't be terrorists, remembering that she tried to downgrade the Oklahoma City bomb to being caused by a 'midlife crisis' - committed by someone in his twenties?

She's not known for her accuracy, Bonny.

She certainly isn't, Lily - she is defining 'terrorism' by religion and skin colour. She wouldn't be much use in Intelligence, would she?

Probe says Norway killer not insane
New psychiatric evaluation contradicts earlier finding that Breivik suffered from "paranoid schizophrenia".
Last Modified: 10 Apr 2012 11:10
Breivik claims the attacks were necessary in a civil war against Islam in Europe.
A new psychiatric examination has found that confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik is not criminally insane, despite a claim based upon an earlier assessment.
Tuesday's finding comes six days before the 33-year-old Norwegian is set to stand trial on terror charges a bomb and shooting rampage that killed 77 peoople over the summer.
The new psychiatric conclusion conflicts with a previous examination that diagnosed Breivik as psychotic. The initial probe found the confessed killer was suffering from "paranoid schizophrenia".
That diagnosis prompted prosecutors in the case to say Breivik should be committed to a mental institution rather than prison, if convicted.
Breivik has confessed to the attacks but denies criminal guilt. He claims the attacks were necessary in what he calls a civil war against Islam in Europe.

Norway Gunman 'Regrets Not Going Further'
Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in Norway last year, plans to tell his trial he regrets "not going further".
The 33-year-old is accused of committing the terrorist attacks on July 22, 2011, and will face court in Oslo on Monday.
"This will be extremely difficult, an enormous challenge to listen to his explanations," his lawyer Geir Lippestad told reporters.
"He will not only defend (his actions) but will also lament, I think, not going further."

It's a pity he is going to get a soapbox, IMO.
