That's a weird storm story.....

Hurricane Sandy heading for New York, leaving trail of havok (merged) Bounty-20image-edit-1-1-522x293

All 17 crew members are being rescued from the replica of a famous ship that was in distress 160 miles from the eye of Sandy.

The captain of HMS Bounty ordered all members to abandon ship after it lost power and the pumps were unable to keep up with the dewatering.

"The 17 person crew donned cold water survival suits and life-jackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies," said the US Coastguard.

The first rescue helicopter has reached the ship and is in the process of rescuing the crew, said HMS Bounty on their website.

The ship is still floating upright and intact and the coast guard will assess whether it can be saved.

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received a call from the owner of the 180ft, three mast ship, saying she had lost communication with the vessel's crew late on Sunday evening.

An air crew arrived on the scene and regained contact with the ship after receiving a signal from the emergency position indicated beacon registered to the Bounty.

There are 40mph winds and 18ft waves reported at the scene, which is 90 miles southeast of Hatteras in North Carolina.

The current Bounty was built for the 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando and has since appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

The original Bounty is known for the mutiny that took place in Tahiti in 1789.

She's a beautiful ship:

Trouble at sea: The Bounty - which featured in Hollywood blockbusters Mutiny on the Bounty and Pirates of the Caribbean - sailed into trouble on Sunday night after losing power

Call this a silly idea, but as she had lost power - COULDN'T THE CREW HAVE USED THOSE BIG WHITE THINGS ABOVE THE DECK? THINK THEY'RE CALLED 'SAILS'?

According to the Sky report, the pumps had failed:

The captain ordered his crew to abandon the ship, which is located 160 miles from the hurricane centre, after it lost power and the pumps were unable to keep up with the dewatering.

Also according to Sky, two of the crew are missing. It all seems rather confused for now.

That might explain why they couldn't use sail power?

Oh dear. I wonder why they decided to try to sail around the storm instead of going back to port?

ETA: This storm has been known about for some time, why not return if possible instead of trying to get around it? It is known that it is a monster sized one.......

I suspect Captain Blight would have had them keel-hauled and court-martialled for abandoning the ship, having put her in peril - I mean, it wasn't exactly a secret that there was a giant storm heading in their direction, was it?

a beautiful ship indeed, what I think is strange is this: lost power so easily? don´t they have batteries inside the ship or any other way to recharge the main core of the ship to avoid that problem?

I would have thought there was some kind of backup, Pedro. And she is supposed to be an exact replica, so surely there were hand-pumps?

Mind you, all we know is what is in the media, so the reports probably aren't entirely accurate. If there are two men missing, then I hope they have stayed with Bounty and can ride out the storm.

Yes bb1, I agree with you. We, in Portugal, have an exact replica of a ship from the Portuguese Discovery ages, when Portugal showed new worlds to the world, with an engine ready to use in case of any problem at sea, although it can also function with the same exact way when it discovered new worlds showed to the world.

Coming through: Waves wash over the sea wall near high tide at Battery Park in Manhattan, New York, on Monday, with New Jersey in the background

From my extensive knowledge of tide levels at Battery Park, gleaned from watching too much Law and Order and CSI New York, so much water already is not good.

What do members who have actually been there think?

No, Bonny, definitely no secret. I honestly despair sometimes. Having said that, what a shame for the missing sailors.

However, I get frustrated by the fact that other people have to go rescue them.

Portugal has some beautiful ships, doesn't it, Pedro? And the replicas are amazing. When I went round the Golden Hinde, I was staggered by how small she was, to sail around the world when so much was unknown.
