Baroness Thatcher has died at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke, her spokesman Lord Bell has announced.

Lord Bell said: "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning.

"A further statement will be made later."

She'd been ill for some time, so maybe not too surprising?

I am sure a few toasts to her will be being drunk in Scotland tonight. She did more to set us on the path to independence than anyone since William Wallace, leading to the standing joke about us having more pandas than Tories.

I know she was disliked by some, but as my daughter pointed out some time ago, she did make it possible for women to buy their own houses, take out loans etc as she abolished the idea that a male relative had to sign the papers so as to guarantee the transaction. LL

She did do some good, LL, undeniably, but I don't think she will ever be forgiven for the damage she did to society with that greed is good immorality.

She wrecked lives and communities.

She did win a war, she didn't sell UK gold to the Chinese and she didn't make pretendy claims re WMD. I didn't like her, but when I compare her to blair and brown .... I'm glad I voted SNP. Nowadays I abstain, I never liked politics anyway. LL

Well, I'm sad. I thought she was great. And she enabled me to start a Business on my own credibility. I nearly worked myself to death in the process, but that's another story. She gave me the means.

And that's apart from what she did for The Falklands.

Everyone sees her differently, Sabot, I suppose history will judge whether the good outweighed the bad.

One plus was that she at least commanded respect, even from people who didn't like her. I doubt if anyone respects Call Me Dave and his cronies.

Just seen a segment on CNN where they talked to a man who said he owed her so much as she made it possible for him and his wife to buy their council house and have something to pass on to their kids. However, he did say he was a Labour man and found fault with her fight with the unions, because as a printer he was affected by the outcome. LL

That's it, isn't it, LL? It was good that people could buy their own council houses - but that led to housing being treated, not as homes, but as a means to massive profit.

Which has led us to where we are now, with insufficient affordable housing and the shameful Bedroom Tax.

There are a lot of things like that, that seemed a good idea at the time - and have been good for individuals, but bad for the bigger society.

People in council houses on any kind of benefit - including pensioners on tax credits - are no longer going to be given any assistance if they have a single spare room, LL.

So, an elderly widow with a spare room is going to be expected to find the difference out of a very low income if she wants to have a spare bedroom for visiting family. And if she's lived in her home all her life, well, tough, think of all those Rumanian gypsies who will need housing

Cancer victims often need a separate bedroom; they are no longer going to be allowed to have one unless they find the money. The list is endless.

The bl**dy government is doing its best to pretend the only people claiming benefit are the likes of the Philpott scumbags, when in fact, the majority are pensioners and working people on low wages.

These folk are already near the breadline and are being kicked even more. Please note, there are few smaller houses for them to move to even if they wanted to; we are mainly talking about people in two-bedroom houses.

The grocer's daughter, who became the longest serving British prime minister of the 20th century, will be honoured with a full state funeral at St Paul's Cathedral.
Not since Winston Churchill's death has a politician been granted such a tribute. His funeral was also held there in 1965.
'A wide and diverse range of people and groups with connections to Lady Thatcher will be invited,' Number 10 said.
'The service will be followed by a private cremation. All the arrangements being put in place are in line with wishes of Lady Thatcher's family. Further details will be published over the coming days.'
The union flag above Number 10 Downing Street has been lowered to half-mast and flowers were left outside her Chelsea home within an hour of the announcement of her death.

According to the BBC she is having a Ceremonial Funeral which is NOT a State Funeral. We shall see. Re the bedroom, thanks, I still don't understand the ins and outs of that. LL

I really, really hope the government doesn't go overboard and try to impose a day of national mourning for Mrs Thatcher - it will be like pouring petrol on a bonfire.

I have just watched all of the seasons and episodes in English, LL. but John Nettles has left, and there is a new one now.
