Theresa May asks permission for Met to start Madeleine McCann inquiry in Portugal

Home Secretary Theresa May has sent an official request to Lisbon for permission for Scotland Yard to begin a new investigation in Portugal into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

It follows the disclosure that the Met has identified 38 potential suspects — including 12 Britons — who are “of interest” because of their presence in Portugal when Madeleine vanished.

In the letter, drawn up for Mrs May by the Crown Prosecution Service, she asks the Portuguese authorities for their help in gathering new evidence. But, in a more significant step, she also requests permission for Met detectives to be stationed in the country.

That will effectively allow Scotland Yard to take control of the previously stalled investigation, and raise hopes of a possible breakthrough.

A response from Portugal is expected within two weeks. Last month, after a two-year review of evidence, the Met announced it was launching a full-scale investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance. She was nearly four when she went missing from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve in 2007, as her parents dined with friends nearby.

A Portuguese probe was shelved in 2008 but the Yard began a review in 2011, following the intervention of David Cameron at the request of the McCann family.

Last month the Met said that the review, which cost £5 million, had identified 38 “persons of interest” from four European countries, including Portugal. They will be the subject of the new probe. Twelve are Britons who were in Portugal at the time.

Scotland Yard has said neither the McCann family nor the friends who were staying with them were among those they have identified for further inquiries.

If Portuguese approval is given, the Met is expected to seek new forensic evidence in the country, and pursue hundreds of possible leads the review is understood to have uncovered. However, sources caution that there remains no prime suspect and the Met’s inquiries are still at an early stage.

The new Yard inquiry began partly because Portuguese authorities are unable, under their law, to reopen their probe unless compelling new evidence emerges. Met detectives will hope to uncover this, and believe it could eventually lead to the case being solved. The new investigation also raises the possibility of a trial in the UK, if a British national is identified and arrested.

The Home Office declined to comment on the letter, but confirmed that Mrs May remained determined to offer every assistance to Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry as they seek to find their daughter.

A spokesman added: “The Home Office remains committed to supporting the search for Madeleine McCann, and we have always said we would provide the Metropolitan police with the resources they need to investigate her disappearance.”

That's probably annoying the Amaral supporters.

No doubt things will move smoothly now - call me Dave probably put the final touches to it all in between buying squid last week; the rest is just a formality.

Yes, it's very significant that it's been signed by the Home Secretary in person, Pedro - no danger of that getting lost in the post.

IMO, things may move fairly quickly, as I doubt Cameron was in the Algarve just for a holiday....

for me, this is what really matters:

"Mrs May remained determined to offer every assistance to Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry as they seek to find their daughter.

A spokesman added: “The Home Office remains committed to supporting the search for Madeleine McCann, and we have always said we would provide the Metropolitan police with the resources they need to investigate her disappearance.”, together of course, with finding her, also to bring her safe and sound to her home.

My friends, this was taken from Lux, here it is the translation:

http://www.lux.iol.pt/nacionais/pgr-recebe-pedido-de-auxilio-judiciario-por-causa-de-madeleine-mccann-maddie-madeleine-mccann-pgr-apoio-judiciario/1475405-4996.html

Attorney General receives request for assistance because of Madeleine McCann.

The Attorney General's Office (PGR) received a request for assistance from the British authorities in the investigation opened in London the disappearance of British child Madeleine McCann, in 2007, in the Algarve.

In a statement sent today Lusa, the RMP states that received "a request for assistance from the British authorities," adding that "there is no prediction of when the steps will take place."

Also notes the PGR that "the British authorities can not perform acts in Portuguese territory, can only be allowed to attend their presence to assist the Portuguese authorities in the execution about that application."

It means that the British authorities can not carry out any examination or questioning unless accompanied by the Public Ministry (MP).

London's authorities have confirmed that there are Portuguese between the 38 persons of interest that British police want to question in the investigation that was opened in that country.

The British press had already advanced the hypothesis that the Scotland Yard opened its own investigation into the case, the review sequimento opened in 2011 by intervention of the Prime Minister, David Cameron.

At the time, police confirmed that a delegation of senior officials of the Crown Prosecution and British detectives visited Portugal in mid-April to discuss the next steps with the Portuguese authorities.

Parents, Kate and Gerry McCann and another British Robert Murat, were made defendants by the Portuguese authorities in July 2007, but the July 21, 2008, the MP ordered the filing of suspicion, which spelled the end investigations.

The MP Portuguese always admitted reopening if new data about the child's disappearance from a holiday village of Praia da Luz.

I should think the decision has already been made that the Yard are going to be allowing pretty much free rein to clean this mess up with a token PJ officer or two along; that is, after all, in Portugal's best interests, which is rather more important than shrieks and howls from the Gonc cult.

Interesting exchange. And if the McCann haters have been told once there was nothing 'secret' about those books, they've been told a million times. Yet still they cannot grasp it, any more than they can grasp that this is a NEW investigation, and bears no resemblance to the Amoral shambles and attempted stitch-up.

EVERY SINGLE TIME the idiots pose that questiion they give the McCanns' legal team a further way of hammering home the libel case against Amaral.

They are too stupid to realise that the book 'A Verdade a Mentira' was written not to expound the intricacies of the case accurately but simply to rehabilitate him. To rehabilitate Amaral who was thrown off the case for being a bad cop.

It was his propaganda book that has meant that these fools have clung to this particular theme. Everybody who has done any personal research knows that those books were not as Amaral claimed, "exclusively intended for police services and government agencies". It is a great shame that in this case and others it seems that Amaral himself did not do sufficient research into the matter.

When they begin to understand the basis on which Amaral wrote his book, the inaccuracies and downright lies present in his book and the reasons for the McCann pursuing this man for the effect that his lies have had on the search, maybe they will see that their own foolish questions are actually proof of the libel which Amaral has perpetrated and which the McCanns are suing over.

This is just one of the downright lies in his book. There are others.

With amazement the police officers discover a series of books and manuals exclusively intended for police services and government agencies.

His literary effort is one long lie, Greenink, but it's pointless trying to get his fan club to grasp that. I really do not know what is wrong with them. Give them a choice between far-fetched lies and simple truth, and they'll choose the lies every time.

That hateblogger pretendy 'Dr Roberts' did another of his yawn-inducing rants. Same old same old, and a great cure for insomnia, but hilariously, he appears to have written it, with the usual impeccable hater timing, just before news broke about Mrs May's signing the document.

The waffle ends:

So, before the government, as represented by Theresa May, commits irrevocably to the voyage, she/they would be well advised to count the lifeboats.

rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl

By 'committing irrevocably' does he mean signing the letter so Dave can pass it to the President of Portugal before they go for a holiday dip as they're on the Algarve? Pcorneater

All these pages full of dog stuff are just a waste of time!

Sending the dogs in 3 months after the abduction, was a waste of time and money. What was the point? when god knows how many PJ, GNR, Dogs, and four family's had been in the apartment.

They found nothing of any use.

Final Report) but also, some of them at the reputed National Institute of Forensics Medicine (check Appendix I), whose final results did not corroborate the canine markings, which is to say, cellular material was collected that was not identified as pertaining to anyone specific, and it was not even possible to determine the quality of that material (v.g. whether it could be blood or another type of bodily fluid).
